Unseen Energies, also known as GeoPathfinder.net

The Fruits of Our Ongoing Research Into Forces, Fields, & Frequencies

You may notice that this webpage, which was previously found as an entire website called GeoPathfinder.net,  is divided into five pages about Earth Energies (EE) and five pages about Electromagnetic Fields (EMF).

Our primary investigative focus has been a combination of Earth Energy research and remediation, and Electromagnetic Field sensitivity. If you read the book,"Survival of the Sickest" by Dr. Sharon Moelem, you'll get a good idea of how chronic stress sources such as these can turn off your body's DNA proofreading mechanisms, cause DNA mutations and protein malformations to skyrocket, and alter both your body's expression of many genes, and their expression in your progeny. It can be scary stuff, and we have been focused on both geopathic (harmful Earth Energies) and excessive levels of electromagnetic energy for a number of reasons:

  • First, because of the results we have seen from working with them, even if the client doesn't believe in this stuff.
  • Second, because the other stressors are well known and can be dealt with by the average label-reading human.
  • Third, because their effects are cumulative, sneaking up on you like the frog in the slowly heating pot of water, and
  • Fourth, because their causes require some expertise, instrumentation, or special abilities to track down.
Backing up a bit, I (Bob Dahse) find pathways and formations of geopathic (from geos - of the Earth, and pathos - suffering) energy. Hence the website named GeoPathfinder.
After about 20 years of experience in finding water, lost/buried objects, people, etc. I started to use my dowsing experience to help folks who suspected that their house, or more specifically, their house's location, was trying to harm them.
This led to years of on-going field research since 2002, and Earth Energy deflection and dissipation provided to over 175 homes and businesses. It also led to the writing of the book "Planetary Patterns", now in its second edition. And both working and living with off-grid, solar/wind electricity installations since the mid-1980's has provided many useful insights into the options available for reducing exposure to electromagnetic fields. So when we work at geopathic stress abatement, we also locate any stressful areas related to EMF pollution, or "electrosmog", ranging from excessive electric/magnetic field exposures, to "dirty electricity" (harmonics and transients on the AC lines), to RFR (radio frequency radiation) exposure from any wireless sources, either inside or outside a re

Years of this rather narrow focus eventually fused with our day-to-day lifestyle choices, fueled by both intuition and logic, and began to meld into a common theme. The other 11 pages of our homestead-related website break this overall theme down into what we hope you find to be manageable bits. And updates to the site can now be found at our blog site.

Our Book on Earth Energies

Planetary Patterns - A Dowser's Survey of Earth Energies

Partly as a service to my energy remediation clients, and partly as a reminder to myself (my memory has never been the greatest, except for numbers), after a few years of field research using dowsing and divination, I found it necessary to publish a book specifically on Earth Energies. The reference to patterns in the title comes from the inspiration I got in reading Guy Underwood's book, "Pattern of the Past". Guy dealt mainly with the unique patterns he was finding while dowsing archaeological sites in England.

I have found that almost every Earth Energy has a unique pattern that I call its "signature". Now in its second edition, Planetary Patterns covers the usual stuff found online or in other books on the subject, plus corrections on that data and loads of additional information. It also includes extensive and exclusive descriptions of many other Earth Energy patterns that are either completely new or, perhaps, lost and rediscovered. There is a chapter dealing with what I call the Spherical Field surrounding all physical objects. This field is used as a theoretical foundation for finding what sort of effect a particular energy pattern has on humans.

All of the formations and pathways are shown in full-page, 2-D or simulated 3-D illustrations to help you visualize this hard-to-imagine stuff. And if you need updates for anything I've found since publications, just check Page 3, below.  Whatever is not in the book is there, and vice versa. You can see an Adobe PDF file (requires Adobe Reader, available free here) of the table of contents at this link.

From the back cover of Planetary Patterns:

It's about energy, Earth Energy. It's not man-made, and there are dozens of types, covering the entire planet. They flow upward, downward, or across the Earth's surface, but you can't see them. Some are entirely favorable to living things, or geobeneficent. Others are quite stressful, or geopathic, adding to all the other environmental and emotional strains we're subjected to. Spend a lot of time in geopathic zones and you'll probably get sick. But if you can avoid these spots, or find someone who knows how to dissipate or deflect the harmful energies, you'll soon feel better and get better. Wild animals and a few peculiar people, such as myself, can do something you've probably lost the knack for: geomancy, or using specialized senses to discern between helpful and harmful Earth Energies. Proper training and persistence can help you regain your dormant abilities. But in the meantime, isn't it nice to know that somebody else went through the trouble to catalog the unique patterns, or signatures, of all these formations? That's what you're now holding. And if you don't believe in any of this, that's quite O.K. I didn't either, until I learned how to find, figure out, and fix these things. Either way, the Earth will continue to exhibit these patterned energy fields. So if you're willing to learn more, please read onward and prepare to have your beliefs challenged!

About Us

In brief, you should know the following, which you can find out more about on the main home page of this website.

We are Larisa Walk and Robert (Bob) Dahse. We have been together since 1982. We live in the rolling hills and temperate, humid climate of southeastern Minnesota in the "upper Midwest" of the United States. We work for wages as little as possible, maintaining a "poverty-level" income. We prefer to work for our subsistence instead of paying for endless wars and a bloated, deficit-based federal budget. Needless to say, we are both the "black sheep" of our families! We have been living with off-grid, solar electricity (and sometimes with wind electricity) for over 30 years, using rainwater collection for all of our water needs. We compost all of our kitchen and bodily "wastes", along with those of our two pet sheep. We grow most of our food and use organic methods learned from childhood (along with plenty of reading along the way), honed through over 5 years of soil consultation and testing that we provided nationally through our former business, "Underfoot Soil Consulting Service".

Our home is owner-built using straw-bale construction and it's heated by both direct passive solar techniques and by using a masonry wood-stove of our own design (burning about a "cord", 128 cu.ft., of fallen "soft maple" per year). Although we live in frigid Minnesota, we grow lettuces and other greens both in our solar-heated greenhouse and in indoor window boxes year-round. We steam-can, steam-juice, root cellar, "live-store", or solar-dry all of our garden's bounty. Most of our spring/summer/fall cooking is done using a parabolic solar oven or a PV-powered AC electric stove-top. In the winter we cook on our wood-stove or use the AC stove-top and home-built, 12-volt DC oven. We very rarely use our propane gas cook-top.

Since we don't like senseless suffering or death, we have been successful and healthy vegans for about 40 years (each). Our diet is whole-food, chemical-free, gluten-free, lactose-free, casein-free, and primarily home-grown, wild, or shipped-in Certified Organic as a last resort. And our transportation, when we need it, is primarily by recycled 2000 Honda Insight hybrid, our recumbent Catrike, "tadpole-style" tricycle, converted into a solar-charged, human/electric hybrid vehicle, and (since 2009), a solar-charged electric car, converted from a gasoline-powered, 1979 Porsche 924.

You will note, as you read the various subjects we cover, that many of our efforts involve "hybrid synergy" (except our seed supply; we save open-pollinated varieties for planting) and robust back-up systems. Our former Toyota Prius and bikes were/are gasoline/electric and human/electric hybrids. Our wood-stove is a masonry/steel hybrid that heats our hot water and includes an active solar, air-to-air heat exchanger. Our house is a hybrid of straw-bale infill, "stick-frame", and post-and-beam building techniques. Our sauna is sometimes used as a "summer kitchen" and as a foul-weather food dehydrator. Our 2.3 KW photovoltaic solar electric system doubles as a supplier of hot water for much of the year, and also utilizes excess sunny-day input to charge our electric and hybrid cars, hybrid electric trike, electric tractor, electric mowers, etc. The electric vehicles can be directly charged from our solar panels or we can use AC chargers and our inverter. You get the idea. We like things that do multiple tasks or use various inputs.

Having read all of the above I will assume that you think we are purists, tree-huggers, and neo-Luddites. That's far from accurate. We use technology where we feel that it is appropriate, from an environmental, economic, and sociological perspective. We are not creating or raising children, and we consider this choice to be the basis of our version of an ecological life. Human life means more than being a DNA copy-machine. Never fear, someone else will pick up the slack! The few things that we buy we view as tools, to be used for accomplishing specific tasks, and we don't skimp on tools. We typically don't follow directions or dogmas, but stay within the confines of the Law. We've read, and continue to read a lot, and make decisions based on sorting out as much information as we can handle, balancing the rational, logical results with well-honed intuition. We encourage others to do the same. Our choice of lifestyle is political, in that we don't wish to support the Earth-killing decisions made either by those in power in Washington D.C. or more locally. If the only legal way to do that is by living pretty close to the land in a low-impact, low-income, atypically self-sufficient mode, then so be it.

"Truth goes through three stages. First it is ridiculed. Then it is violently opposed. Finally it is accepted as patently obvious." Arthur Schopenhauer, philosopher, 1788-1860

"That which is impenetrable to us really exists. Behind the secrets of Nature remains something subtle, intangible, and inexplicable. Veneration for this force beyond anything we can comprehend is my religion." Albert Einstein

Page 1: Earth Energies
Location-Based Health and Disease

A bit of personal history: I am Bob Dahse and I am a dowser, one of those peculiar folks who follows a long European tradition of walking around with a forked tree branch, asking questions and looking for things. Since 1982 I have tracked down some good well sites, found the depth to water, and located buried pipes, cables, tanks, and even people, (although usually not buried ones!). It was an interesting but infrequent hobby.

But in 1990, a friend who is an electrical engineer asked me to join several other dowsers, electrical engineers, and power company technicians to map some pathways of "stray voltage" on 3 farms. These are unintended (but nearly unavoidable) underground electrical currents from the AC Power Grid, more properly called "returning neutral ground currents". They cause health problems for penned animals and for humans who unknowingly build a home in the wrong spot. This introduced me to energy dowsing, and to the notion that disease can be a function of location.

After a few years of this I started to detect other pathways that weren't veins of underground water, buried objects, or errant Grid power. So I began to document the unique character of each path or formation, including its effect on humans, its directional flow, and its distinctive pattern, or "signature". And since 2002, initially at a client's request, I have been doing extensive field research and have completed energy remediation work on more than 170 sites. It appears that I have evolved into an Earth Energy specialist, or Geobiologist (not what I wanted to be when I grew up!). Even though my primary focus is research, I continuously learn more details about our planet by doing work for clients, most of whom are suffering from symptoms ranging all the way from poor sleep to cancer.

Many people have asked how I dowse, how I discovered I could dowse, and how I am able to figure out the intricate patterns found in Earth Energy formations with just a forked twig and curiosity. Well, my ability may be somewhat inherited from the "crazy Swiss side of the family", as my father used to say. He was referring to my mother's Hangartner relatives, and it included her father's brother (my grand-uncle John). John died before I came along, so I never got to know him, but I was told he could locate lost children and help to cure various illnesses through unknown means. When I suddenly found that I could dowse, I figured I had him to thank for at least paving the way for my particular form of oddness.

You can get more details about how I stumbled on my ability or how I manage to dowse energy patterns, or you can contact me via e-mail if you have questions on this topic. And for those of you who think you are ready to remove geopathic energies from a building,
you may want to download our PDF on the topic. We used to have a more general version available for free, but the document has been revised to be much more specific. It is now available as a 6-page document for a fee of $2.50, mostly so that we can keep track of who is using the information. This is a procedure not to be taken lightly, as harmful Earth Energies can be mistakenly re-routed through unintended buildings if you are not careful!

Some Definitions & Explanations

  • Feng Shui: Literally “Wind Water” (or harnessing wind and channeling water). Known as the Chinese art of placement, it’s now mostly thought of as a method for improving “luck” by harmonizing your home environment with local landforms and energies. Lung Mai (Veins of the Dragon) is the Chinese name for a subterranean water stream, causing Sha Qi, unhealthy energy. It is one of the 60+ types of Earth Energy I work with almost daily. Many Feng Shui texts recommend the removal of geopathic energies before proceeding with other “cures”.
  • Geopathic Stress: “Geo” means earth. “Pathos” means suffering. Stress is a pressure, tension, or strain on something. So Geopathic Stress is a strain on our bodies caused by forces generated within, across, or above the Earth, causing some form of suffering. An energy practitioner would see it as a disruption in the “etheric field”, the healing blueprint of our bodies, often physically manifested as adrenal over-stimulation and eventual fatigue.
  • Geopathic Stress Elimination, sometimes known as Earth Acupuncture, is NOT about improving luck, prosperity, or your love life. It moves beyond most popularized Feng Shui goals and practices by seeking out and rerouting local energy patterns that cause stress to bodies (human or otherwise) resting over them, the original goals of ancient Feng Shui. This is mostly a problem of location and duration. If a third of your time is spent in bed and another third at a stationary worksite, those are the areas of prime interest.
  • Earth Energies themselves are ubiquitous and usually unsensed, so their elimination involves somehow detecting them, finding their exact path, identifying them, quantifying and qualifying their energies, and finally avoiding them, dissipating them, or deflecting them around the area in question. First researched in Germany in the early 1900’s, some of these energies can now be located using precision instruments such as electroscopes, magnetometers and scintillation counters, but many still resist detection by any means but dowsing.
  • What is dowsing? It’s using your body as a “tunable” sensing device to detect, locate, qualify, or quantify things. Traditionally used to find underground water or mineral ores, it can (and has been) used to find almost any conceivable “target” including these energies. While many animals can easily sense Earth Energies, using them for navigation among other things, humans have, for the most part, seemingly lost this ability. I found mine in 1982.
  • What are these Earth Energies? It is theorized that most originate either as benign energy flowing upward  from deep within the Earth and radiating upward, or perhaps reflecting upward off the Earth's crust from a cosmic source, but warped into geopathic form by cavities, mineral ore concentrations, faults, and veins of underground water. Many of them are referred to as “lines”. But they exist as 3-dimensional “planes”, invisible walls that can be vertical or horizontal. A few of them are man-made but the vast majority are naturally occurring. They are spaced as frequently as every 18 inches, all the way up to hundreds of miles apart. They can be arrow-straight or meandering, singular or periodic, spiraling, cylindrical, or even branched. And all of them have a characteristic width and a pattern, or “signature”, that can be traced using dowsing.
  • How are they removed? As I practice it, shaped rods of “mild steel” or copper are placed at strategic points along the geopathic formations to dissipate them or divert them around a building. The length of the rods and their shape are varied to get the best result without sending additional negative energy into neighboring buildings. The rods can be buried around the perimeter of the structure or placed on/in interior/exterior walls. The maximum deflection occurs at the vertical elevation of the rod, diminishing as you move upward or downward, as if you were placing a 3-D balloon in the energy plane's path.
  •  What are the general symptoms of stress? They include but aren’t limited to: insomnia, obesity, headaches, depression/anxiety, exhaustion, high blood pressure, hair loss, irritable bowels, infertility, allergies, hard-to-diagnose pains, immune system depression, and chronic, slow-onset diseases, even cancer. Excessive stress can be caused by injuries, air pollution, water impurities, food contamination from additives, packaging materials, and pesticides, indoor chemical fumes and fungal, bacterial, or mite allergens, electromagnetic pollution, and self-imposed strains from poor dietary choices, caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol. Geopathic zones can be “the last straw” to an immune system already stretched thin by these other physical strains combined with emotional pressures and inherited genetic weaknesses.
  • The primary goals of my research have been to identify these energy patterns, to standardize their names using precise pattern descriptions, to conduct experiments in energy deflection and dissipation, and to publish a thorough and systematic survey of this information. This has involved work on over 170 homes and businesses in the past 12 years, and publication of the 2nd Edition of my book, “Planetary Patterns – A Dowser’s Survey of Earth Energies”, found on the Home page.

Where does GeoPathfinder fit in the wide world of energy work?

Those of you who are familiar with the principles and practices of modern Feng Shui are probably wondering why our website's tag-line used to be "The Roots of Feng Shui". A more precise description would have been "Geomancy as the The Original Basis of Feng Shui".

  • In its most ancient form, Feng Shui practitioners would look for ideal sites for homes, business places, wells, and even burial plots. On its most basic level this involved looking at solar access, protection from harsh winds, ready availability of quietly-flowing, non-stagnant water, drainage flow patterns, nice views, and a pleasant esthetic "feel". This was a job for someone with good observational skills, experience, and a bit of intuitive insight.
  • The next level involved finding someone with additional talents and training. Geomancy was used to find pathways of harmful and helpful "chi", or life energy. Underground water channels are a good example. Where they rise upward from bedrock to form a "Blind Spring" the energy is auspicious. But where they flow outward and downward from the spring their energy is quite negative. The usual response to a bad location was to simply move somewhere better.
  • The next level was concerned with zones. The geomancer would use a compass of sorts to find ideal places in the home for each aspect of your life. Dividing a home into zones for different activities is a central theme for the Chinese, for Hindu "vastutechture", and for modern architects as well. Rooms designed with sensible door placement, smart window locations, stimulating/soothing colors where appropriate, and architectural details that give a good visual flow would seem like home no matter which century or continent we're talking about.
  • The fourth and most abstract level deals with symbolism. At this level the geomancer was dealing mainly concerned with "cures", or fixes for problems that couldn't be dealt with using the three previous levels. This involves things like wind chimes, mirrors, running water, symbolic objects or colors; whatever it takes to get some chi moving smoothly again. Much of modern Feng Shui is focused here, since modern folks are often neither land owners, permanent residents, home owners, or even home remodelers. They need a quick fix for what's perceived as bad luck, leading to poor health, loss of income, relationship failure, or whatever.
  • Our focus goes beyond the symbolism of this fourth level to get back closer to the roots of Feng Shui. Using a proven mix of dowsing and divination, our analysis of Earth Energy patterns goes deeper, to try to reach the fundamental causes of stress on the energy fields surrounding all living things. And yet, taking into account both the modern transient lifestyle as well as the needs of more rooted inhabitants, our remedial techniques are quick, minimally disruptive, and permanent (barring inadvertent modifications or tampering). We aim, simply, to De-stress Your Address!

Geopathic Energies: A type of energy generated by our planet....

  • Appear to correspond to specific geological formations found underground, along with other geophysical sources
  • Are definitely not imaginary (refer to the "Attention Skeptics" section, below)
  • Are VERY common! They exist everywhere, but in different types, and at differing intensities
  • Weren't a health problem when humans were nomadic
  • Aren't your fault, although some people do seem drawn to them
  • Cause physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual alterations
  • Move downward, upward, or across the Earth's surface, depending on type
  • Are stable in location, except for day/night/moon-phase changes, or local disruptions of the Earth's crust
  • Have a cumulative effect on humans which can be abated with reduced exposure or other techniques
  • Can be detected, located, quantified, avoided, dissipated, diverted, or modified
  • Are not the only variety of Earth Energy; there are just as many beneficial ones!

Attention Skeptics!

I am quite surprised that you got this far! I was raised on a steady diet of high-end math and science, along with a great deal of religious training, and a fair amount of religious skepticism that increases with age. My high school counselors had me headed toward engineering school to design cars, while my relatives thought I'd become a minister. So, when I started finding these oddball talents in myself, I wanted to find ways to verify their reality. Using what I knew, I applied the research methods of science to what I found.

Using a scientific process that involves observation, hypotheses, and predictions may seem foreign to something that most reasonable people would generously call a pseudoscience. Science after all is based on repeatability by any researcher at any time in any place. What I do is based on my peculiar ability to stretch my sensory capabilities. So I prefer to think of myself as a test instrument, not a scientist. I gather data in an indirect manner, not unlike any other test instrument used by scientists. And as an instrument I prefer to deal only with what I can repeatedly and reliably sense, not with grand and supposedly meaningful, but often quite fanciful, interpretations of that data.

So with dowsing, the data gathering and prediction is pretty easy. You show a homeowner where the gas pipe, water line, or buried electrical cable supposedly runs into their home and they can set you straight one way or the other. Or you tell them the depth to the water table that their well taps into and they can quickly verify your results.Or you find a freshly-dug basement excavation with a 2-inch tube of underground water running into it from what American dowsers call a "Water Dome" (or a "Blind Spring" if you're in England). You then place an L-shaped, soft steel rod over what you perceive to be the upstream side of the underground vein of water. You turn the horizontal part of the rod to one side and watch in disbelief (yours and theirs) as the water stops flowing. This trick was performed by dowsers in the early 20th Century using wooden stakes pounded in along the water pathway. They would tap on one side of the stakes to "persuade" the water vein to move. Strange stuff indeed! Some refer to this process as "Earth Acupuncture".

Or, like me, you start messing with the pathways of major deer/rabbit/cow/sheep trails (not single tracks, but the well-worn trails of multiple animals) in a field by burying metal L-shaped rods in the center of the path, with the horizontal part of the rod moved to one side or the other. You watch as a new trail develops in the next few days, exactly where your dowsing shows that the energy they were following has been diverted. This was how I began to divert harmful energy pathways around client's homes. Humans can be persuaded by the "placebo effect", but observing animal behavior remains as one of the belief-neutral foundations of Natural Science. The libraries that have my book on this subject shelve it in the Science section. Enough said?

When YOU can do the above YOU'LL no longer be as skeptical!

When I list the person who found an energy as "me", don't assume that I am the very first to find one of them. Most of this knowledge has probably been discovered much earlier by others but the details have been lost over time.

* Also known as a Black Vein, Water Vein, Lung Mai (veins of the dragon) with Sha Qi (unhealthy energy), or Earthray. Originates in Blind Spring.

** More accurately a "returning neutral ground current". Power company lawyers say that "stray voltage" legally only affects animals!

*** The Geodetic Line is sometimes confusingly called a Ley Line, but it's much wider and composed of 11 single, variably-spaced, vertical planes.

**** The Aerial Grid, or "Ley Line" has a downward-flowing component of vertical planes, with planes surrounding it that are the Earth's upward-flowing, terrestrial reaction to them.

*+ This is the type of "Ley Line" that famously passes through Sedona, Arizona; also occurs every 123 miles north or south and every 48 to 53 miles (at mid-latitudes) east or west, forming highly energetic crossings

GeoPathfinder - The Business That Developed

GeoPathfinder is the name of the business end of my overall efforts in energy detection, classification, and experimentation. Besides selling books and downloads on the topic, I do local, on-site service at the homes and work sites of clients, and I can check for helpful or harmful energy pathways from a distance using a procedure called "remote dowsing". I first learned about this possibility by reading about a dowser from Maine, Henry Gross, who used the technique.

My work can range from locating helpful and harmful energy paths to actual short-range deflection or dissipation of the energies. Dissipation greatly reduces the intensity of geopathic formations, while deflection or diversion warps their path around the site while carefully avoiding neighboring homes (trying this on your own is not recommended, or the Karma is on you!). The effect is immediate and, and far as I can tell at this point, permanent. And best of all, it doesn't require the client's belief to make it work. That is especially helpful when working with non-human animals, whose belief systems are poorly understood!

Want to see what one of these energy patterns looks like? This is a photo of the 2-dimensional outline of the unseen energy pattern from a vein of underground water. It was first dowsed, then traced in the dirt using a stick, then outlined in diatomaceous earth for contrast. Not all of the detail is shown, and the pattern continues in both directions along the water flow, but you can get some idea of the complexity involved. The vertical width of the pattern is roughly 2 feet. There are actually 23 parallel lines during the day, not just the three shown, and 3 sets of 3 parallel lines at night. The circles are really vertical cylinders. The lines are actually vertical planes. One of the other names for this energy pattern is the "Wet Etheric Line" (see more on the EE Updates page).

Historical Updates Since 2004

Latest News (7/06/2005):
One morning in early June, while petting our 2 youngest sheep, I noticed a large number of very small flying insects hovering as a group. They were concentrated within a 3 by 5 foot oval, fluttering up and down within 3 feet of the ground. It seemed odd that they'd stay within such a small space since I saw nothing unusual about the area. Vegetation was identical within 10 feet on all sides, as was sunlight, soil type, moisture, etc.
After mentioning this to a few people I decided it was time to grab a dowsing rod. What I found was a vertical oval tube in a stable location matching the area the flies were in. It has no other distinguishing features, like concentric layers or associated planes. And it doesn't radiate upward from the ground like most Earth Energies. It beams down from above with a uniformly beneficial energy throughout its small footprint. On von Pohl's scale of 0 to 16, its daytime energy is +14, and +12 at night.
I don't usually feel the energy character of where I am at a given moment. I prefer not to involuntarily notice these things since it would be very distracting. But after standing in this Single Oval Cylinder for a while, I do notice a "let-down" when I step out of it.

Latest news (7/08/2005):
After completing the second edition of Planetary Patterns in April, I took a break from actively seeking out other Earth Energies, hoping that I was nearly done with new stuff. But after finding the Single Oval Tube, I figured that my education was back in session. So, dowsing rod in hand, I asked if there were any nearby formations I should know about. I was directed to an otherwise unremarkable spot in a neighbor's hay field.
I first found 4 concentric vertical cylinders with a maximum diameter of about 6 feet. Thinking that the form matched that of a Positive Bull's-Eye Pattern, I next checked the character and intensity of the energy for confirmation. Each of the cylinders was geopathic, with an intensity of -8, definitely not the same as a PBP. Searching further, I found a total of 8 single planes associated with the cylinders. Four were about 6 feet long, beginning at the edge of the outermost cylinder and ending in a tightening clockwise spiral. Four others were about 12 feet long, ending in a tightening counterclockwise spiral. The short spiral planes had an energy level of -8, the same as the cylinders. But the long spiral planes were at +6.
I went home to draw out what I had found. But the next day I went back to re-check the spiral planes since I'm not great at remembering details. Closer examination revealed 4 single-walled cylinders at the edge of the concentric cylinders. Their diameters were roughly 3 feet, with energies matching the long spiral planes at +6. Here's a drawing of the whole Spiral Cylinder Complex.

Latest News (7/16/2005):
While walking home from the site of the Spiral Cylinder Complex I once again asked about additional formations of Earth Energy. I was directed to a patch of bare, heavily traveled soil on a field road used by my closest neighbor. At first I found a single vertical plane with a width of about 3 inches. The spot I was led to had a similar plane intersecting with the first at a 90-degree angle. The intensity of both planes was +14 (+12 at night), decreasing gradually with distance from that point. The energy in these planes is alternating, or bi-directional, at a frequency just below 8 Hz. There are 4 multi-surface spiral planes found between each straight plane. Each is about 6 inches wide with 3 parallel vertical planes. And each on e begins in a widening counterclockwise spiral about 16 feet from the single plane intersection. The energy of the spiral planes is +15, day or night, and it moves toward the single plane intersection, apparently feeding energy into it. Map dowsing revealed a spacing of about 20 miles between the intersections, with the straight planes moving NE-SW and NW-SE. But if you're looking for some benefit from the straight planes, you'll need to be within about 1000 feet from their intersection. The Spiral-Fed Grid looks like this:

Also on this day, in the same field, I found a large triangular pattern I'm calling the Triple Spiral.

Three large-diameter spirals were connected by 100-foot long straight pathways of six vertical, parallel planes. This is how it looks from above. The detail on the right shows that there are actually six planes in this simplified drawing. Energy intensities range from 0 to +15. Beginning at the center of a spiral, at +15, the 6 parallel move toward the outer arms of the next spiral, dropping steadily in intensity as they move away. When the intensity reaches zero the straight planes curve left to begin the next spiral. After 21 turns, increasing in intensity, we again reach the middle at +15.

Latest news  (8/25/2005):
I've found a new energy pattern consisting of 7 parallel, vertical, meandering, 2-foot-wide, highly geopathic, bi-directional planes running through a friend's home. I won't bother with a drawing of it, since it looks so much like a "Subtle Line", pictured on page 52 of Planetary Patterns. I've been calling it a Meandering Noxious Line. It's highly geopathic, ranging from -16 (out of 16) during daytime to -14 at night. It affects the Etheric plane of the human spherical field. At this point (10/31/2005) I've diverted 3 of the above formations from homes in my vicinity. But in most recent news, I've also been shown a new energy formation in a nearby field. I'm calling it a 3-Spiral Cylinder. It consists of a small, central, vertical tube with three short, 3-plane spirals leading out of it. I'll post a drawing with more detail ASAP. (see update on 6-03/2006)

Those who have a copy of Planetary Patterns may notice that their copy lists the Geodetic Line and Dragon Line as synonymous. Alanna Moore e-mailed me to let me know that the British Society of Dowsing uses the terms "Dragon" or "Serpent" line to denote something entirely different from the very straight, 11-plane pathway I was describing, and which Colin Bloy called a Serpent or Dragon Line. That's the problem with common names that aren't entirely descriptive. From what I've found using map dowsing, the Dragon or Serpent Line is a curving pattern that starts/ends in a spiral, and has 21 vertical planes with a far wider spacing. I'm now calling the straight, 11-plane pathway a Geodetic Line to distinguish it from Serpent/Dragon Lines, even though the term is a bit generic. Both patterns are beneficial to humans and both are infrequent, so the confusion I've caused can perhaps be forgiven in time since I don't have a nearby Serpent/Dragon Line to investigate, and my map dowsing is limited mainly to client requests.

Latest News (11/05/2005):
While corresponding by e-mail with a fellow earth energy researcher in Tennessee, he asked about a pulsing EMF signal he found in downtown Knoxville. My map dowsing showed a similar phenomenon nearby. I checked it out and found that it was the intersection of a Stray Voltage Pathway (returning neutral ground current from an AC powerline) with a deep DC Telluric Channel. The DC channels are infrequent, traveling east-west, at north-south intervals of about 17 miles. Their pattern is a single vertical plane. They occur in nearby parallel pairs, about 50 feet apart, and are quite beneficial (much more so than their AC cousins).

Latest News (11/28/2005):
Just before taking a trip to Minneapolis to do some energy diversions I was led to a new formation I hadn't found before. There were five concentric, vertical cylinders spaced about a foot apart. Flowing toward them, from a distance of around 12 feet, were four counterclockwise and clockwise spiral planes. All of the planes were quite beneficial, changing a bit in intensity at nightfall. I've been calling it a Positive 4-spiral Bull's-Eye.

The nested cylinders are at an energy intensity of +13 during daytime and +11 at night. The spirals are at +12 during daytime and +10 at night. While on the trip to Minneapolis, a client asked if there was some sort of negative energy affecting a rather sickly looking evergreen tree next to her garage. A perfect specimen grew right next to it. When I checked the tree I found the same pattern as above, but a geopathic version with all the same components. We joked about naming it after her but I've been calling it a Negative 4-spiral Bull's-Eye. The nested cylinders were at -14 during daytime and -12 at night. The spirals were at -12 during daytime and -10 at night.

On the same trip, but at a different client's house, I found another new formation. The client was describing some sort of positive energy he felt coming off of the Mississippi River in his backyard. The river takes a sharp bend just upstream of his property. I found five seemingly straight, vertical, parallel planes at about an 11-inch spacing running through his back yard. Their energy intensity was +12 during daytime and +10 at night. They seemed to flow directly from the center of the river upstream of its turn. When I map-dowsed a Minneapolis/St. Paul map it showed the energy line moving directly from his property to a point in St. Paul where it reconnected to the Mississippi River again. It's as if the river wants to flow straight through the city while avoiding the big corner it now takes. If you'd like a bigger surprise try map-dowsing the Mississippi just north of New Orleans and you'll find a similar change in the river's energy flow to a point far west of its present highly regulated course. I've been calling this pattern River Lines and I hope to soon do more research on other river pathways.

Latest News (03/15/2006):
A client in Decorah, Iowa had a little problem after I completed an on-site diversion of geopathic lines. We aren't sure exactly what caused it, but a pet dog who had been sleeping in the bedroom now refused to do so. An animal communicator indicated that the dog was frightened by a "flashing energy" in the vicinity. I did a map check of the building and found a 20" wide pattern of 4 parallel, straight, vertical, evenly-spaced planes that were geopathic, but only to the Astral energy layers of either a dog or human's body, and only slightly (-2 during daytime, -4 at night on a scale of 0 to -16). The Astral disruption possibly explains the dog's fear of sleeping there, but I suspected more. This pattern has been tentatively named the Weak Astral Line. On-site checking of the pattern confirmed the location and other details but the bedroom walls also had unshielded AC wiring giving off electric fields, 24 hours a day, right at the height of the dog's bed. We found the AC circuit feeding these outlets and recommended turning off the breaker at night.

Latest News (04/03/2006):
In an effort to boost the health of our elderly cat I checked out our house to see if there were any geopathic or geobeneficent energy patterns that were specific to felines. What I found was a 2-foot wide geopathic pattern of 5 parallel, straight, vertical, evenly-spaced planes affecting only the Etheric energy layers of the body. Since this is the layer dealing with recuperation, it could play an important role in the health of a well animal or the recovery of a sick/old one. The intensity was around -4 (out of 16) and was consistent day or night. It's a uni-directional formation so it's easily diverted or dissipated. I've called it the Feline Etheric Line since it only affects cats.

Latest News (04/15/2006):
After finding the Weak Astral Line, I reasoned that there might be other fairly low-powered energy pathways in my vicinity that affect other energy layers of the human body. I found one running E-W, just north of our sheep pasture. It was a wide, multi-plane pattern that was fairly straight. It had an intensity of -4, but only affects the Etheric field. I've been calling it the Weak Etheric Line.

Latest News (05/07/2006):

An energy pattern across the road from our house, in a nearby field has bugged me for a while. Throughout the winter I kept going back to it, trying to figure out its complex pattern. The terrain was bumpy and snow cover was inconsistent, making mapping it out using my footsteps more difficult. When the snow was gone and "mud season" had ended, the remaining packed-down vegetation left a more easily negotiated area. I was finally able to spend some time carefully tracing the pattern. Seen from above, what I found resembles an eight-petalled flower, but about 20 feet across. For now I'm calling it an Eight-Petal Cylinder. Any point on this pattern has a uniform energy intensity of -4 during daytime and -6 at night. The 4-foot diameter central tube is singular. The "petals" are 3 parallel planes with
3" spacing between them.

Latest News (6/03/2006):
Since it's a tradition of ancient Feng Shui, for a number of years I've been tracing the pathways of "positive chi" through client's homes. Sometimes the path is simple and fairly direct, other times quite complex and sinuous. What Chi Lines have in common is a single, vertical, undulating, uni-directional, vertical plane. It usually enters through an east window or door and exits out the west. Its energy intensity is +7 during daytime and +10 at night (breaking the usual pattern of less positive intensity at night). But as much attention as the ancient practitioners gave it, its effect appears to be only on the Monadic layers of the human spherical field.

The 3-Spiral Cylinder I mentioned back in November of 2005 certainly took a "back burner" for a while. The latest check I've done on it indicates that it's a beneficial energy formation, with intensities of +10 during daytime and +8 at night. It affects both the etheric and astral fields of humans. The basic pattern is shown here, from above. A roughly 4-foot diameter, 5-plane central tube radiates upward, with energy flowing clockwise in 2 planes and counterclockwise in the 3 others. Energy moves outward from each layer into three spiral planes that flow either CW or CCW, collapse to a point, then reverse spin direction to resume flow in their respective tubes. Unlike this crude sketch, each spiral actually consists of 5 parallel, vertical planes, separated by 3 inches, and flowing both CW and CCW.

Latest News (09/25/2006):
My latest wanderings through a neighbor's hayfield led to a new discovery of a small, geopathic energy pattern that is similar to the Eight-Petal Tube. For now I'm calling it a Four-Petal Cylinder. The energy intensity, using von Pohl's scale, is -14 on the central, vertical cylinder, and -10 on the outer spirals. It looks like the Eight-Petal tube, shown above, but has only four of the double spirals and is smaller in diameter (around 4 to 8 feet from what I've seen so far).

Latest news (10/16/2006): Correction: During the time since Planetary Patterns was published I've continued to find additional Celtic Cross Straight Lines that exceeded the 7X7 plane pattern found in the book. I was running into additional planes far beyond what I thought were the outer boundaries of the energy field. Checking for a total this past weekend, I ran into a total of 44 7-plane Straight Lines on one side of the central plane. This would make a total of 89 Celtic Cross Straight Lines running E-W crossing with another 89 running N-S. What a goof-up! It's a good thing that these planes are good news instead of bad.

Latest news (06/28/2007):
This summer's dowsing work has revealed three new beneficial energy patterns I hadn't found before. The first is what I call the Sleep Line. It's a set of 11 straight, vertical, parallel planes that improve your sleep. They run North-South at 30 mile intervals, so the chance of finding one is a little slim. But, while trying to find out how I was able to sleep so well with a bed situated over crossing "Ley Lines" (Aerial Grid Lines), I found these 11 planes also passing through the bed on March 1st of this year.

The Three-Ring Circle is what I call a pattern that's fairly frequent in our area. There are 6 of these 350-foot diameter, concentric, vertical tubes within the 40 acres we're centered on. The pattern consists of three big rings, 9 inches apart. The actual rings are the beneficial part, though of rather low intensity. I found the first one in our back yard.

The Single Circle is something I found at a friend's house during this year's Energy Fair, while doing a check for a better well site and while doing the usual energy diversion routine. After working late in the evening and camping overnight, I had the feeling there was something I missed. I found this downward-beaming, 28-foot diameter, vertical tube in their orchard. It was a great place to watch the sun rise, and it promised to be a good spot for the "cosmic tube" broadcasting device they wanted to install (biodynamic, homeopathic device for generating positive energies to local plants, etc.). I've just completed the 107th dowsing/divination job related strictly to Earth Energies! This hasn't made me more complacent or less enthusiastic about the process. I'm just getting faster and more experienced while continuing to learn even more. It's a humbling experience and one that I take quite seriously, as you never know if/when you could suddenly lose the ability to do this stuff! Also, I'm now able to do Word-to-.PDF file conversions, so I can display some of the illustrations from "Planetary Patterns" as Adobe PDF files. You can click this link to see what a Blind Spring looks like.

Latest News (04/22/2008):
While checking my own home for any geopathic energies that might have escaped the deflecting power of buried rods around the house (due to possible frost-heaving of the rods over the winter), I stumbled on a new geopathic pattern. I had wondered why my dreams seemed at times so hectic, sketchy in detail, and sometimes rather upsetting. I found a band of 7 straight, vertical, parallel planes running through my pillow that affect only the Astral layers of the Spherical Field (see below). I call it the Astral Line (AL). Now that this pattern is diverted my dreams are running on a much more "even keel" (clearer, more detailed, less disturbing).

Latest news (08/24/2008):
While posting an entry about "Ley Lines" on the British Society of Dowser's website, in the Eath Energy forum, I finished the post by saying that I was going to go check for any new energy patterns that "the source" (my euphemism for who/whatever gives me my dowsing education) might offer. I was pointed toward a formation NW of my home, about 5 miles away. It was a nearly straight cluster of vertical planes with beneficial energy for humans, but only on a very subtle energy layer (see below). I'm tentatively calling it the Positive Straight Monadic Path. It's a group of 8 planes, found in two groups of four, separated by about 19 feet. Within each cluster of four planes, they are separated by about 7 inches. The innermost planes have the strongest energy, at +9 during the day, and at +6 at night (on von Pohl's scale of 16). I'm taking off on the trike today to divine more details onsite.

Latest News (10/05/2008):
While answering a posting on the Earth Energies Forum of the British Society of Dowser's website, I map-dowsed a spot in England called "Catle An Dinas" for a dowser named "ocd". He had found an energy pathway and wanted verification or more detail from other dowsers. What I found was mildly geopathic, with an intensity of -6 at night, -4 during the day, and only affecting the Monadic energy layers (see below). The pattern consists of 70 straight, parallel, equally-spaced, unidirectional, vertical planes. The one I found had energy flowing southeast. They appear to be rare since the nearest one to my location is 1200 miles away. I've tentatively named it the Negative Straight Monadic Path (NSMP).

Latest News (8/01/2009):
One of the really nice things about doing either on-site or map-dowsing for geopathic energy clients is that I occasionally get "informed" about new earth energies I have not encountered before. There are a couple of new ones to report and when they have been more fully researched and verified by other dowsers I will report the details and add them to the table above.

Latest News (9/03/2009):
OK, so there are 3 new energies to report. The first I found, verified by a reputable British dowser, is: very straight, stretched NNW-SSE, downward-moving energy during daytime, reversed at night, 30 parallel planes, equally-spaced, at about 9-inch intervals, negative to perennial plants (-3 on a 16-point scale during daytime, -5 at night) and beneficial to humans (+3, day or night). I didn't know what to make of this mixed type of energy, so I checked for others closer to home. I found examples parallel to this one at roughly 6 to 8-mile intervals. I call it the Wide Mixed Solar Line (WMS).

The second consists of: 5 straight, parallel, vertical, equidistant planes, 31 inches wide, unidirectional, periodic every 1700-1800 feet and parallel, NNW-SSE, geopathic to the outermost human spherical field (see below) at night, intensity of -3 out of 16, day or night. I call it the Narrow Periodic Subtle Line (NPS).

The third consists of: 20 straight, parallel, vertical, equidistant planes, 46 feet wide, bi-directional, downward-moving during daytime and reversed at night, occasional (the next nearest one to me is about 285 miles north), WNW-ESE, and geopathic as above. I call it the Wide Occasional Subtle Line (WOS).

Latest News (9/06/2009):
Some exploratory dowsing at a friend's house led to the discovery of yet another geopathic energy. At first I thought it was just another collection of straight, vertical, parallel planes, but it had some surprises in store. It consists of 34 vertical, parallel, equidistant planes that form the multi-layered exterior of a large vertical tube, about 280 feet in diameter. The distance between planes is about 11 inches. The energy intensity is -2 on a 16-point scale, and geopathic only to the outermost layer of the human spherical field (see below). The energy moves upward during daytime and downward at night, as if flowing toward the sun, not away from it. I call it the Big Multi-plane Cylinder (BMC).

Latest News (1/12/2010):
While checking a site for a new client (via remote dowsing of a Google Map GPS coordinate) I found a new type of magnetic anomaly. The client stated that a compass went wild in this spot. Instead of the 5-plane anomaly I found around here, this (in Iowa) had 3 equally-spaced, vertical planes. The outermost planes had an AC frequency of about 43 HZ, while the central plane had a DC component. The total width was about 87 inches. Since this one is woder than the first I found, I'm calling it the Wide Magnetic Anomaly.

Latest News (4/07/2010):
For some time now I've been hearing about "Ley Lines" that cross near Sedona, Arizona that are supposedly highly energetic and beneficial. I've also read about a similar crossing near Pipestone, Minnesota that local native Americans consider sacred. So I started map-dowsing to see if there was anything resembling these closer to home. What I found was a series of north-south and east-west energy pathways that form a grid over the entire Earth. During daytime they consist of 8 vertical, parallel, nearly straight, directional, planes ranging from 29 feet, 4 inches to 42 feet, 6 inches in total width. The N-S and E-W groups all seem of equal intensity. On Baron von Pohl's 16-point scale they rate from +12 to +15 during the daytime and +10 to +13 at night, with the more central planes in the pattern being strongest. The planes are not equidistant and their spacing, along with the total width, varies throughout the day. They affect the Physical and Monadic layers of the Human Spherical Field (see below) during daytime and the Etheric and Monadic layers at night. Their directionality and overall position appear to remain constant, day or night. Now that I've had a chance to verify the above information on-site about 34 miles away, I'm tentatively calling this pattern a Wide Planetary Grid Line. You can call it a "Ley Line" if you like, but it will then be easily confused with a Geodetic Line (a "Michael" or "Mary" line for those of you in the U.K.) or an Aerial Grid line, even though their widths, intensities, and frequency of occurrence are all quite different. At my latitude the N-S lines occur anywhere from 48 to 53 miles apart, but this goes as high as 185 miles at the equator and down to nearly zero at the poles. The E-W lines seem to regularly occur about every 123 miles. If you find anything like this nearby I'd love to hear more about the details!

Latest News (11/03/2010):
It has been a very busy summer here on the homestead and most of my dowsing time has been devoted to doing map-dowsing for clients and phone-connected remediation work with them. I have now completed over 150 jobs. One notable exception to the remote work is our new neighbor's home (building the additions to it have been what kept me so busy this summer). She had various symptoms indicating possible geopathic influence, including poor sleep and a feeling of vertigo in one spot in her tiny kitchen. So, after diverting a crossing of Primary Curry Lines from the bed area and a Wet Etheric Line from the kitchen, life there is a bit better. Soon the weather will be too cold for construction and I can go back to more on-site dowsing and research.

Latest News (12/08/2011):
I have recently been in contact with another energy dowser named Maciej Nodzykowski in Poland who finds energy patterns using a set of L-rods. His patterns are neither geopathic nor beneficial, but seem to correlate more with Guy Underwood's work on ancient spiritual sites in the U.K. You can download a free PDF showing some drawings of the patterns he has found at this link.

Latest News (03/21/2012):
I have just found a new 10-plane vertical pathway that’s about 4 feet wide. It is moderately geopathic, very straight, it affects the body’s etheric energy field, and, luckily, it’s easily divertable using a metal L-rod on one of its outermost planes. Since it is so similar, but narrower, than the Straight Wide Etheric Line, I am tentatively calling it the Straight Narrow Etheric Line. It was found by map-dowsing the property of friends in San Diego whose son is like a canary in the coal mine when it comes to geopathic energies. He’s always the first to notice them, and this one recently started moving through his bedroom. It pays to pay attention to young folks, especially the sensitive ones!

Latest News (01/19/2013):
While doing some map-dowsing for a client in Ecuador recently I came across four new energy patterns, at least for me. The first one, which passed through the client's home, is discussed in our blog under "Patterns" Update. At this point I'm calling this moderately geopathic, 11-plane pattern a Crust Fracture Line since it correlates with existing valleys in our area. They are geopathic to humans, affecting only the "Monadic" energy layer of the Human Spherical Field (more on this below), and they are easily diverted using one of their side-most lines.

If you check the details you’ll find that there are eleven equidistant, vertical planes in this “line”, with a total width of around 25 inches (63.5 cm). The energy intensity varies, on a 16-point scale, from 4 all the way up to 15 depending, respectively, on whether it’s day or night, and on the nature of the line itself. And while I only found one of these passing through the home in Ecuador there are several right here near our home. They seem to correlate solely with pathway of existing valleys on our ridge-top property. Since none of our immediate neighbors (many of whose homes I’ve dowsed) has built a home in what usually ends up being a temporary water-run in a heavy rainstorm, and because of their fairly low intensity, I simply hadn’t noticed them here before. So which came first, the energy pathway or the weak, fractured, limestone crust beneath that allowed these valleys to form? It’s a similar quandary to the correlation between the geologic sinkholes we see here and the “Cavity Vortices” that form in the exact same places. We continue to gather the basic data on these and other surface/subsurface geographic features and their energy counterparts without much more than some tantalizing hypotheses at this point.

The second novel find, which for obvious reasons isn't also found here at home, I'm currently calling the Volcanic Line. This single vertical plane is appears to travel straight over a short distance but, in its entire 3550-foot (1082 meter) journey, from the center of a volcanic cone to the center of its end-spiral, it is rather sinuous, with the spiral end circling counterclockwise to its center point. This is a highly geopathic pattern for humans, reaching 15 on a 16-point scale at night, 13 during the day. A single volcanic cone, depending on its volume, can have up to 10 of these radiating from its center (the most I've found checking existing cones). These lines affect the Physical and Astral layers of the Human Spherical field.

The third pattern found was at least slightly better news for humans. I'm tentatively calling it the Cosmic Circle since further geomancy revealed that its energy radiates outward from the center of the Earth into space. It consists of 11 equidistant, nested, vertical "tubes", the innermost one measuring 352 feet (107.3 meters) in diameter and the outermost 358 feet (109.1 meters). For humans it is beneficial only to the Astral layer of the Human Spherical Field, with an intensity of 4 on a 16-point scale. I will soon be updating our PDF materials and this page's energy chart to reflect these additions.

The fourth pattern apparently has the same geologic origins as the Big Multi-plane Cylinder (a vertical hole in sedimentary rock that once was a channel for water) and I am currently calling it a Big Weak Etheric Cylinder since it affects only the etheric layer of the Human Spherical Field (seen below). It consists of 8 vertical, parallel, equidistant planes at 1/2-inch intervals forming a 148-foot diameter cylinder. The energy in it flows downward and it can be dissipated from its center point. Its energy intensity is 3 at night and 1 during daytime.

In other related news (January 2014), a reader in the U.K. asked me to check on hydraulic fracturing (“fracking”) sites extracting natural gas to see if there was any effect of this type of drilling in terms of modifications of Earth Energies. I used Google Maps to check a drilling site in Terry Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. It was very easy to spot in a satellite view and, after printing the map, I dowsed it to see if there were any changes after drilling. Once again I found five Crust Fracture Lines radiating outward from the drill tower. The energy lines extended from 1/3 to 1/2 mile, moving outward from the tower and ending in a tight CW spiral, where the energy moves upward. So besides the other worries associated with fracking (groundwater loss and contamination) we now have a possibly highly geopathic energy source at each well site.

Latest News (11/11/2013):
At the end of October a fellow "energy worker" contacted me asking questions about a peculiar spot in a friend's meadow that caused her to feel dizzy, light-headed, and somewhat nauseous. Since I like to help other dowsers, I got the address and printed a Google Map, then dowsed the area to see what I could find.

East of the house, in the pasture in question, I found a 91-foot diameter circular energy pattern which I had not encountered previously. It was actually a vortex, with energy flowing downward and clockwise during daytime and reversing at night. The energy was geopathic to humans, with an intensity of 10 to 15 (on Baron Gustav von Pohl's 16-point scale) at night and 4 to 9 during daytime. The energy is more intense as you near the center of the vortex. In terms of effects on humans, it reacts with both the Etheric and Mental energy layers surrounding the human body, meaning that it can have deleterious effects in terms of healing and reproduction as well as mental well-being (the dizziness, etc.).

The energy can be dissipated using a vertical rod buried at the center of the pattern. If using copper you'll need a 30-inch piece of wire. If using soft steel (as I usually do) a 22-inch piece is enough. For lack of a better term I'm calling this pattern a Reversing Etheric Vortex. While I'm getting indications that it is caused by the intersection of some physical phenomena in the Earth's crust, I haven't yet figured out what these phenomena might be. That always seems to be the toughest part, at least for me. Gathering the data is a breeze but figuring out how it fits within the big picture is another story.

Latest News (01/17/2014):
As an update to the previous update, Crust Fracture Lines can also be man-made. After map-dowsing a hydraulic fracture drilling site in Pennsylvania, I found that radial crust fracture lines fan out from the drilling tower. I'm not sure if they correlate with actual drill pathways, but their energy is directional, away from the tower, running about 1/3 to 1/2 mile and ending in a tight CW spiral, at which point the energy flows upward. The naturally occurring crust fracture lines only radiate upward. And while the natural lines affect only the monadic energy layer in humans, the man-made ones affect both the astral and etheric layers, making them a larger potential health hazard.

Also, a repeat client near Menomonie, WI reporting feeling something odd at home and I map-dowsed their property to find an 11-plane energy pattern running through their home that hadn't been there a year earlier. The planes are not equally spaced and the pattern has a total width of about 9 feet. The geopathic energy can range from -4 to -14 on a 16-point scale, and the energy is directional (unchanging day to night). I have tentatively named it a Wide Astral Line (WdAL) since it affects only the astral layer in humans. I have not yet found any physical reason for the appearance of this line in the home so more research on site may be necessary this coming spring.

And in the beneficial energy department, a routine scan of our home for any recently-occurring or previously undiscovered energies led to the discovery of a spiral pattern centered in our living room. Since it affects only the causal, monadic, and Buddhic energy layers in humans I've tentatively named it the Single Subtle Spiral (SSS). It flows outward as a single counterclockwise spiral at a regular spacing of 14 inches. The energy level declines slightly as you move outward in the pattern, beginning at 15 (on a 16-point scale) at the center. I don't know what its positive effects are, but at that level it must be good for something!

Latest News (05/16/2014):
Sometime on or near April 28th a new energy formation appeared in our orchard. The orchard is also fenced for our chickens. One day in early May I noticed one of our hens, "Goldie" standing still for a very long period beneath a just-leafing young hazelnut bush. The other hens were grazing and cruising around as usual. I thought, "Well, that's just Goldie being odd, or maybe she's not feeling well". A couple of days later I saw her standing there again, stock still, seemingly just meditating on "the pure white light of stupidity".

Finally I strode out there to see what was up, Y-rod in hand. I shooed Goldie away and began to dowse the spot. What she had apparently found was the exact center of a 167-foot diameter series of 87 concentric vertical cylinders of beneficial energy. The pattern has its top intensity of 10 at the center (on Baron von Pohl's 16-point scale), with intensity dropping evenly to zero at the outermost cylinder. The pattern remains the same, day or night, and I've yet to find any correlation between its energy and any geologic formations or changes in the local geology. In terms of its effect on the "Human Spherical Field" (see below) it appears to affect only the three outermost energy layers, the Causal, the Buddhic, and the Monadic. And since chickens only have the four innermost energy layers (Physical. Astral, Etheric, and Mental), Goldie seems to be aware of energies beyond her abilities in at least two senses, tuning in to energy layers that affect only her species, and in having more than a mere "bird brain". Schooled by a chicken. Humbled once again! I've begun to call this pattern the Wide Concentric Cylinder Cluster.

Latest News (08/15/2015):
In early August one of our two pet sheep started acting oddly. I'd often find her out near the chicken coop instead of out in the pasture grazing and she would only lie down in two distinct spots. They were distinct because she was having a hard time getting up and would spend a few minutes flailing about with her rear legs, trying to get upright enough to boost her rear end up and use her front legs to rise normally. This led to two pits dug into the ground at each spot in which she preferred to rest. As her lameness increased we figured that perhaps she was experiencing the arthritic  symptoms of Lyme disease, and we treated her with an injection of tetracycline. This worked to cure the symptoms but didn't stop the odd preference in resting spots, including another spot right in the middle of the entrance to her shed.

After getting educated by chickens (previous posting) I decided to check out these spots for any new sorts of energy patterns. All three spots had a pattern of six concentric, vertical cylinders, about 10 feet in diameter, emanating beneficial energy. The energy is strongest at the center of the pattern, explaining why the resting spots were so clearly marked. The energy intensity, on a 16-point scale, ranged from 8 (daytime) to 10 (night) at the pattern center and from 5 to 7 at the edge. Energy rotates clockwise in these cylinders as seen from above and the Etheric field is the only one affected. Since this deals with healing injuries to the body's blueprint I now have a better idea why that sheep needed to rest where she did. I'm referring to these spots as Rotating Bull's-Eye Patterns.

Latest News (01/16/2016):

Further into the fall last year, the same 12 year old sheep mentioned in the previous posting became suddenly lame again (even after treatment with tetracycline worked for over a month) and couldn't graze. I was walking out into the fields to collect choice bits of clover and alfalfa to feed her twice each day, bending down low to cut he forage with a hand sickle. I soon noticed that my neck muscles were seizing up and my neck vertebrae were making ominous cracking sounds. Chiropractic adjustments and massage didn't seem to help, so I just put up with it thinking the problem would go away when the sheep started eating hay later in the year. It didn't go away and actually progressed. Finally, now that my muscles had bound up so badly that I was unable to even turn my neck sideways easily, I decided that it was time to try dowsing the situation.

I asked to find any energy pathways or formations that might be causing my neck stiffness. I found a very straight pathway (single vertical plane) that reverses direction from day to night. It passed right through my bed pillow! On a geopathic scale of 0 to 16 it registered a 7; not enough to cause, for instance, cancer but not great either. Asking about when this new energy started passing through our home I narrowed it down to August 21, 2015. Asking about its source indicated disturbance of the local underground rocks by someone drilling a well 5 to 6 miles to our NW. I asked if it could be diverted or dissipated. Either would work but dissipation at both ends of the building was suggested. I did so with two 22" long vertical copper wires. Placement had to be precise since the energy pathway was less than 1/16" wide. The energy level was reduced to 0.07 on the 16-point scale, a 100-fold reduction. My neck is starting to loosen up after a couple of days but getting full freedom of movement back after being exposed for 5 months may take some time. Five days later I now can turn my neck quickly from side to side, a movement that caused shooting pain for the past month. I'm referring to this new energy pathway as a Thin Causal Line since only the Causal layer of my body was affected. How such a subtle field change led to intense physical symptoms is a question for another day.

The Human Spherical Field - the basis for the descriptions of effects on humans (and for other purposes)

Above you can see the theoretical framework on which I now base much of my research on the effects of Earth Energies on the human body. I won't go into the details of how I bumped into this odd structure (it's covered in a chapter of Planetary Patterns), but I was looking for something entirely unrelated. And I'm certainly not claiming to be the sole discoverer of this structure. Something this obvious to an energy worker has probably been described well before my time, but I haven't seen it anywhere.

The most recent work I have done to discover more about this energy structure around humans indicates that that there are a total of 56 energy layers around an adult human instead of the 35 layers shown above. What you see above is a cut-away view of 35 energy layers surrounding a human body, like the layers of an onion surrounding the core. The outer 30 layers are perfect spheres, extending to a radius of around 10 feet from a point just below the navel. The innermost 5 layers follow the general contour of the body. All of the layers are in groups of 5 with a larger space between groups, so I usually just refer to a group of 5 as a unit. The most recent work shows 56 continuous energy layers with "zero-energy" layers filling in what I originally perceived as spaces. I really don't know quite yet why there are 5 layers in a group or why there are what appear to be "structural place-holders" between the groups. And I don't know why there are 8 groups of energy layers. Perhaps it's just an artifact of how the energy beaming into us reacts to our internal energies. More on these 5-layer units shortly.

You also can see a point on the left side where the outermost 5 layers fold into a focal point, or axis, that aims straight into the body. The outermost layer of the sphere becomes the innermost layer of the axis. In reality there are 6 of these focal points forming 3 axes. During the day, energy moves from the head to the feet, from the front of the body to the back, and from the right side to the left. When the sun sets locally the directions reverse. And, unlike the simplified drawing, every one one of the spherical layers has a corresponding layer at each focal point.

Humans have 8 groups of energy, other animals have 5 groups, plants have 4 groups, and single-celled organisms have 3 groups. Plants experience a similar directionality of energy movement, as humans and other animals do, but they don't carry it around with them as we do (it remains stable based on N-S, E-W, and Up-Down). And yes, that's because the Earth itself has these same types of energy layers in groups.

One very practical use for the ability to distinguish plants from animals using dowsing is that it allows you to find fertilized eggs versus unfertilized eggs. The fertile ones show 5 energy layers so they can be interpreted as future animals. The unfertilized ones show 4 energy layers and so are more closely related to plants.

I formerly used the terminology of Hindu texts to label these groups of energy layers. The non-spherical layer was called the Physical. The first spherical layer was the Etheric, with the next in order being the Astral, Mental, Causal, Buddhic, and the Monadic. I have since discarded this confusing terminological artifact found in Hindu, Theosophical, and Biodynamic texts in favor of a simple numerical position. Some folks have confused what I'm talking about with "the aura" forming out of "chakras". As I understand it, auras are internally generated and follow the body's contours but what I'm discussing is externally generated and spherical. If you are familiar with the purely-energy-based theories in physics, where the particles of which we are familiar exist only as standing waves in an extra-dimensional energy field, then you would have a good basis for understanding what I am trying to explain (see bottom paragraph for details).

So when I formerly described an energy as "Etheric", what I mean is that it affects the etheric field of the body; the one that could be called the "blueprint" for cell regeneration and healing. If an energy affected the Astral layers I'd expect it to alter someone's emotions, sleep patterns, or dreams. If it affected the Physical layers I consider it the most obviously powerful, since any of the Earth Energies that positively affect the Physical field are the ones that animals (other than human animals) are most consistently drawn to, or avoid. Planetary Patterns has a chart at the back which details the positive and negative effects on each layer of the human spherical field. This has been supplanted by the most recent chart that is now available in PDF format. In that chart you can see the 8 distinct energy fields (indicated by black areas) surrounding a human, beginning with #1 which is closest to the body, and the grey vertical strips that indicate the "zero-energy" layers. I am currently working an another chart that will hopefully provide the details about which energy layer affects a corresponding bodily organ. This information, taken together with the relative intensity of the energy, its proximity, and the duration of exposure, will be the factors determining how serious the energy will be to an individual and where to look for physical symptoms.

For those of you not comfortable using these terms, it occurred to me that the "layers" correspond to the 10 dimensions postulated in the modern physics of String (or "M") Theory. The first layer, which I've called "Physical" corresponds to the familiar dimensions of length, width, and height (the X, Y, and Z axes) plus Time. It has been referred to as "space-time". The remaining 6 dimensions correspond to the Astral, Etheric, Mental, Causal, Buddhic, and Monadic. So if you do not like the Hindu terms, just refer to Space-time, the 5th dimension, 6th dimension, etc. up to the Tenth. Why there are 5 energy-active "laminations" in each dimensional layer (except for the Space-time layer) is something that, for me anyway, remains a mystery.

Another possible model for these peculiar energy layers is suggested by the work of physicist Milo M. Wolff in his book "Exploring the Physics of the Unknown Universe". While most of the book deals with clarifying what physicists do not know about physics, he offers an interesting new model of atomic particles based on wave interference. His model deals with outgoing energy radiating from a point and radiating inward toward that same point, creating bands of "standing waves". If you use your solar plexus as the point and his standing waves as the energy layers his model would predict both inward and outward moving energy but not the multi-layered structure of the Spherical Field or its 6 points of focus for energy moving in and out. Still, an interesting starting point for further research!

Page 4: Dowsing and Divination
Pseudo-scientific Methods for Research

Dowsing and its more encompassing cousin, divination, are methods long used in many cultures for detection, location, quantification, qualification and, in general, learning more about the world around us. These methods, even when approached with rigorous precision and scrupulous attention to detail, are called "pseudo-scientific" simply because they may not be repeatable by anyone chosen randomly off the street.

If you read more about the subject in
Wikipedia you will get a good overview of methods, tools used, and some of the scope and history. But their cited "scientific studies" of effectiveness that call its results, "no better than chance" are quite misleading. Even if we severely limit the discussion to water detection, consider the well drilling trade. Many very successful well drillers are also water dowsers. Do you suppose that in an endeavor where equipment cost are quite high and where the entire process is fraught with the uncertainties and complexities of terrain, weather, underground obstacles, and equipment failure, that a driller would use some procedure that proved, "no better than chance"?

When I began to dowse I started with water detection and moved into well site location, finding the depth and flow data. I then got into locating buried pipes, tanks, wires, and even errant electrical flows ("stray voltage"). But I read about British dowsers like Guy Underwood ("Pattern of the Past") who found energy patterns related to ancient archeological sites. And I learned about other European dowsers and physicians who correlated "cancer clusters" with underground water passages and planet-wide energy "grids" (Ernst Hartmann, Manfred Curry, Baron Gustav von Pohl, Kathe Bachler, etc.). Chinese geomancers have had thousands of years experience finding energy pathways and formations that can have either harmful (geopathic) or helpful (geobeneficent) effects on humans, forming the roots of Feng Shui. And still other dowsers discovered that locating water on maps or aerial photographs could be just as effective as being on site (Henry Gross). I have worked to replicate their work and to move a bit further along the same path.

But What Can I Do and What Can I Prove?

My college background is an undergraduate degree in philosophy and psychology (Analysis-Synthesis), with lots of work in logic, epistemology, and phenomenology. I feel your pain, O.K. skeptics? As an "object" dowser, it was weird enough having my arm or a dowsing rod swing when crossing a "target", because I could tune out other things and select just one. How could that work if dowsing was just a physical process, amplifying some electromagnetically-induced muscle spasm?

Then I started using even more "divinatory" dowsing, where I spent more time asking yes/no, qualitative questions about energy formations/pathways. I refer to it as a "conversation with the planet". This was further out on the limb of "paranormal", and it has bothered some people! I have 3 replies.

1) I'm not a fool, I know the risks, and I take all necessary logical and epistemological precautions, including written research, repetition of questions, reverse-logic questioning, and cross-checking with related, previously revealed information. Whether the answers to my questions come from angels, fairies, demons, the Earth itself, my "higher self", or the creator of the universe, they are all simply treated as just unseen sources, as neutral data subjected to a suspension of belief.

2) More esoteric, "out there" data is treated as such, which is why I used animal studies to verify some of it, and continue working with human clients to see what effects they can describe when I change their personal energy environment.

3) At a workshop given at a Catholic retreat center, one devout woman asked whether I was concerned about getting information from "the devil". The resident nun's reply was interesting. She asked, "If the intention is good, and the results are good, why would you even suggest that"? Although that can't be implied to be a blanket endorsement by "The Church", I can see her point. Doing harm with this stuff is so beyond my capabilities that it's laughable!

Perhaps I can suggest some further reading to enlighten you on the psychological roots of skepticism, the religious fundamentalist aspects of the scientific method, and how to better integrate the two halves of your brain. The book, "Extraordinary Knowing - Science, Skepticism, and the Inexplicable Powers of the Human Mind", by Elizabeth Lloyd Mayer, Ph.D. is a good starting point. But actually developing your own intuitive faculties is far preferable, since you re-acquire an ability you probably lost, or had browbeaten out of you, as a child. My best dowsing student was someone who was a complete "nay-sayer", WAY beyond skepticism. The look on his face when he found that a twig twisted in his hands over an underground channel of water was precious!

The Dowsing Fundamentals

  • Sensitivity
You need to develop the ability to detect a useful signal in a world full of noise and distraction. Different dowsers use different tools to pick up this signal, ranging from the twitch of a finger, to pendulums of various materials, to the various L- and Y-shaped rods of metal, wood, or plastic seen in images of working dowsers, and even to the silver plates used in radionics. You need to develop your own tool set and your own "conventions" for the responses you receive. In my case, with a "Y-rod" or forked twig, a downward pull indicates "Yes" or the location of (or direction to) the targeted item.
  • Selectivity
Next you need to discern one signal from another unrelated one nearby, like tuning a radio or television to the right station. This is where divination comes into play. A simple physical reflex could possibly explain the unintended movement of a dowsing rod, but how do you explain what happens when it responds only to a specific phenomena and no other? This is where we start to lose touch with what can easily be explained away as a sixth or seventh sense.
  • Logical Inquiry
This is perhaps the hardest part of the process for many people who excel at the previous categories. Putting your questions into some sort of order which allows you to corner a specific piece of data has become almost a lost art. Sometimes it can also be a matter of technique. When I search for, for instance, a sinkhole (or "Cavity Vortex", as I call it) I can either:

  1. Stand in one spot, ask to find the nearest (or largest, or deepest, etc.) sinkhole, and, while holding a dowsing rod, rotate in place until the rod pull downward, indicating the direction.
  2. While standing in place, ask how far it is to the sinkhole, then, while holding the dowsing rod, state certain ranges of values like "is it between 50 and 100 feet away" or, (is it less than 500 feet away". A downward pull on the rod indicates "Yes"
  3. Or I could just wander around until I stumble across a sinkhole. This can be fairly easy if I search for "Dry Etheric Lines", the radial energy lines that flow toward sinkholes, and which become more closely spaced as you near the sinkhole. Once, when demonstrating this in a tall grassy field, I mentioned to my client that the sinkhole is right about...                                                                                                                                                                                             ......Here.                That space jump indicates the 2 feet that I fell as I dropped off the edge of the field into the sinkhole.
  4. Or I could sit in the comfort of my home and use a map to find sinkholes using a tiny "Y-rod" made from a single strand of a steel bicycle brake cable, bent into shape and used between pointer fingers and thumbs of each hand.
  • Quantity

One early technique used by water dowsers to find depth to a water source involved standing in place, dowsing rod in the ready position, and treading from foot to foot while counting upward in "depth in feet below my feet". I prefer asking about specific ranges of values or values above/below a threshold. Quantities can be distance, amount, concentration, intensity, frequency, etc.

  • Quality

This can be anything from 3-dimensional energy pattern surveys, to specific effects on a client, or any other thing you can think of that does not involve a numerical value. For instance, when I check a new energy pattern I ask to find all of its structure. Sometimes this involves "dowsing sideways", which is where I rotate one arm directly above the other while dowsing instead of holding my arms side-by-side. This is handy for finding "Primary Curry Grid Lines" that are horizontal, since I can sweep the rod up or down to intersect the line. Doing this with "L-rod" or a pendulum would obviously be impossible.

  • Results: The aim is prediction
  • Inevitably you will be required by someone to prove that you are actually able to find something, change something, or affect something. In water dowsing this is pretty straightforward; someone digs or drills to find the water you predict and they either find it or they do not. One of my friends found it very entertaining when I could pin-point the location of someone traveling to their home and predict exactly when they would arrive. With Earth Energies, first you must be certain that the individual is actually being affected by geopathic energy by checking their major sleeping, resting, and work areas. When you complete the required energy remediation work it may take a week or two for them to notice the difference. Younger people seem to react quickly, while those who have spent many years in a geopathic zone may react much more slowly.

  • Page 5: Geopathic Remediation Services
For those who suspect this may be a problem for them

We offer a number of remote services for far-flung sufferers of geopathic stress, since our hands-on involvement in an intentional lifestyle precludes much travel. And while we were once able to deal with e-mail and telephone questions about geopathic stress for no charge, the volume of requests has become too great. We simply can no longer maintain our homestead, pay the bills, do our continuing research, and answer all of your queries for free. So, starting October 1, 2008, we have posted PayPal button links that make the payment process for our services as quick and painless as possible. The services we offer include:

    • Free Remote Dowsing to check for the existence of geopathic energies:

This will tell you whether or not geopathic energy is a problem at your site but it will not show the details of exactly where the problem areas might be.

Contact us via e-mail (or if this link doesn't work on your computer, simply use our Secure GMail.com account listed as "bobdowser"), or by "snail-mail" at 30319 Wiscoy Ridge Road, Winona, Minnesota 55987, and:

Include your name and the exact address or location of your site (home, workplace, whatever).

At our earliest convenience (I get to an internet terminal nearly every day) we will return a list of the quantities and characters of the geopathic Earth Energies passing through your structure. Details about these energy formations can be found on Page 3, found above.

I do all of this through a process called remote dowsing, or divination, where I grab a dowsing rod and simply ask questions. If you'd like all the details about how I dowse, just Click Here for a free PDF file download. Who or what it is that answers these questions is, and may remain, a mystery. Some have told me that I'm using the dowsing rod as a link between my conscious mind and my "higher self". Others have said that they see fairies communicating with me! I call it "talking to the planet". Whatever. All I know is that when I check out a place later "on-site", the results are almost always perfectly identical. Using this information, I can tell if simply moving your bed is an option or if you'll need some other sort of intervention.

    • Phone Consults are available for any questions you have about geopathic stress.

We once did these for free, but due to the volume of traffic we get, we now charge $12.50 for a 15-minute block of phone time, via PayPal. The only language we are really fluent in is English, so we hope this works for you!

To reserve your 15-minute block of phone time, just e-mail us to set up a time (or if this link doesn't work on your computer, simply use our secure GMail.com account listed as "bobdowser"). Consultation can commence when we see a payment in PayPal and we have agreed on a mutually suitable time. Sorry about all the fuss, but there's only so much time in the day!

    • If you would like a lot more detail, we offer "remote dowsing".

Send a scale drawing or blueprint (or whatever you can muster) of your building to our mailing address:

    • Bob Dahse/Larisa Walk
    • 30319 Wiscoy Ridge Road
    • Winona, Minnesota USA 55987

Please include $50 in US funds (money order, check, or travelers check) along with your name and the exact location or address of the site.

If you would prefer to send a digital photo of a drawing by e-mail, just attach it and send it to our e-mail address (or if this link doesn't work on your computer, simply use our Secure GMail.com account listed as "bobdowser"). You can click this link to make a $50 payment for the service via PayPal.

We will color-code all of the Earth Energy pathways or formations within the confines of the drawing. Keep in mind that a larger scale drawing yields more accurate results. This option really helps if you are trying to visualize the energy formations and pathways in your area. It makes anything from bed locating to full-scale energy diversion/dissipation a lot easier. And if you already are accomplished at energy dowsing, our mapping service can help you locate energy pathways you may not yet be aware of. It also helps you visualize where to place diversion devices and where the resulting diverted energies will flow.

If you need even more detail about how I do remedial energy work, just click the following link. The link will take you to a PayPal page that allows you to download a PayHip document called "Geopathic Remediation Techniques", for which you will be charged $2.50. This document formerly was free, but due to the major changes in the energy environment that this allows even the casual user, I like to keep track of who has this information. Online payment is how I keep track of this.

    • If remote dowsing reveals energy pathways that aren't conducive to furniture moving alone, we can still help at a distance:

The download available at the previous link (above) gives you instructions on preparation and placement of energy-warping metal rods. Using this information, you learn about the entire energy diversion process that we use and we can set up a time via e-mail to do a live energy remediation session by phone (or if this e-mail link doesn't work on your computer, simply use our Secure GMail.com account listed as "bobdowser").

There's a charge of $50/hour for this process but, if you are well prepared, can follow verbal instruction, don't get too chatty, and the phone connection is good, the work itself usually takes anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour.

To schedule a live energy remediation session by phone:

    1. First contact us via e-mail.
    2. Leave your e-mail address or phone number, and we will contact you to set up a mutually convenient time for the process.
    3. Then click this link to pay $12.50 via PayPal for the first 15 minutes of the phone consult.

Page 6: EMF, or Electromagnetic Fields
    Within you and without you

    What are electromagnetic fields?
    • They are commonly experienced as heat, light, magnetic attraction/repulsion, and of course, electricity
    • They are a type of FORCE, or "that which changes either the state of rest or motion in matter"
    • They are one of the 4 elemental forces: gravity, strong nuclear, weak nuclear, and electromagnetic
    • They are the basis of all chemical and biochemical reactions
    • They exist everywhere, in various types and intensities, and a huge range of frequencies
    • They can be dangerous or healthful, depending on their intensity, type, frequency, and dosage
    • They can only be seen if their frequency is in the "visible range", red through violet
    • They are invisible above and below that range, but can still have major impacts on health and well-being
    • They can easily be detected, located, and quantified with the right equipment
    • They can be made less harmful through avoidance, type-substitution, "grounding", and shielding
    • EMF has a cumulative effect on humans, and does not care whether you "believe in it" or don't
    • It has been estimated that about 3% of the general population is highly sensitive to EMF; about 30% is moderately sensitive, with the percentage rising over time
    • Exposure can be direct through conduction (touching a wire or other conductive path), more indirect through convection (breathing in ionized particles), or from radiation (close-up magnetic fields or more distant electric fields from wiring, antennas, metal surfaces, etc.)
    • Some types have irreversible effects while others abate with reduced exposure
    • High frequencies (cellphone, WiFi, "smart meters", power-line harmonics, etc.) can directly and indirectly, through both physical and chemical means, cause DNA and other protein malformations along with other changes in cellular processes which can, most commonly in individuals with other risk factors, initiate cancer
    • Low (power-line) frequencies at best just keep you from getting a good night's sleep, increasing your stress hormone levels, but at their worst accelerate tumor growth, making them a possible cancer promoter
    • "Stray voltage" pathways, more precisely called "returning neutral ground currents", can cause a range of problems, from EMF exposure symptoms to instant death, depending on the situation.
    • "Dirty electricity" consists of harmonic frequencies and transient bursts, possibly causing "Type 3 Diabetes".

    Low-frequency EMF

The Earth's magnetic field (or magnetostatic field) is caused by DC electrical energy flowing deep in its interior. As we get beyond this direct current field into alternating fields we see some naturally occurring AC electrical energy (Schumann/Tesla waves) generated both by the Earth's spin through the Sun's "solar wind" of electrically-charged particles, and by the grand display of lightning flashes happening each minute all over the planet, causing the atmosphere's resonant cavity, from ionosphere to ground, to "ring". Our bodies don't mind these flavors and frequencies since we've had loads of time to adapt to their rhythms. They're actually good for us, and without them we can become disoriented and sick.

But as we began the Twentieth Century and the Tesla-Westinghouse electrical Grid began pumping out 60 Hz (60 cycles per second) current (or 50 Hz in some countries), humans began to use large amounts of electrical power, often transmitted over great distances. The low-voltage, high-amperage loads of motors, for instance, caused huge, pulsating magnetic fields. The power-lines had very high-voltage, lower-amperage electric fields emanating outward around them. And these were all beyond levels found in previous human experience, except for those having close encounters with lightning. Now, these power-line frequencies dominate most home environments and the power-lines themselves have gotten so huge, in both voltage level and amps carried, that they can light fluorescent tubes placed under them and adversely affect sensitive electronic equipment.

    Effects on Humans

The human body has plenty of electrical circuitry inside. Nerves are highly complex combinations of electro-chemical batteries, conductors, and "relays" that both send and receive tiny electrical impulses. The more evolved nervous system uses pulsed DC signals at specific frequencies to operate all of our conscious sensory and muscular machinery, while a "perineural system" existing in even the most primitive creatures uses a steady DC signal for detecting injury and activating the healing process. And these weak signals can easily be overwhelmed by outside interference of the wrong "flavor", frequency, or strength of electricity. The electrical engineers have agreed that a sensitive "frequency window" exists for humans that ranges from about 2,000 Hz. to well over 100,000 Hz. Among practitioners who work with electrically-sensitized clients, below 2,000 Hz the maximum recommended electrical field level is 20 Volts per meter (V/m). But within the biological "window" the recommendation drops to 2.0 V/m or less.

    Indoor Grounding and Shielding

Unless your AC-powered home was wired with metal-shielded "BX" or "MC" cable, or EMT metal conduit, and metal boxes with metal covers, every wire in every wall and ceiling, and every junction box, outlet, and switch will be radiating a powerful AC electric field, including the harmonic frequencies that shouldn't be there.

If you DO have shielded wires and boxes but DON'T have shielded power cords going to your lights and appliances, every power cord radiates the same field. So what's the next worst offender if you replace all of the cords with shielded ones? We have to deal with all of the magnetic fields that surge outward from any large appliance that's running, like electric stoves, refrigerators/freezers, water heaters, air conditioners, etc.

The solution? Stay as far from them as possible! Or look into MuMetal foil shielding (MuMetal is a trademarked name for annealed, 80% nickel alloy, available from, among others, LessEMF). If you find a large magnetic field in a wall, your house wiring may have been done incorrectly. Magnetic fields always spin in one direction based on the direction of current flow. If the house wiring is done so that the outgoing and returning currents on each circuit are in adjacent wires, the magnetic fields from the two wires will be reversed, almost totally canceling each other. If not, there's a magnetic field and it's time to call an electrician. And what about your other exposure sites?

    Outdoor EMF Problem Areas

Cars and trucks can have large magnetic fields near the dash and front floor areas. The solution? Limit your time on the road! The other alternatives would be buying a vehicle with fewer digital gauges, or fastening an aluminum window screen (to shield electric fields) and one of the commercial magnetic-shielding fabric or foils over the "hottest" areas of the dashboard.

And is there an overhead power-line near your home? The voltage of typical distribution wires, before they reach the "transformer can" that lowers it to 120/240 volts, is around 7000-14,000 volts. That's a mighty big electric field you're standing under! The solution? Join with your neighbors to lobby the local power company into installing underground wiring. The Utility may not be overjoyed at your request, but the Earth is very good at sucking up strong electromagnetic fields (that's where the term grounding comes from!) and the Utility will enjoy fewer problems from storm-related power-line damage. Our local electric co-op just buried a mile of 7000-volt, 3-phase distribution line as part of a wire size upgrade near our home. The electric field at head level, along the lines, dropped from 150 volts/meter (V/m) to less than 0.2 V/m. The magnetic field varies with power transmission at different times of day, but its former level was up to 2 milli-Gauss (mG) and it is now less than .02 mG.

    A Note on "Stray Voltage"

So-called "stray voltage" isn't really straying at all. It's the predictable result of electric Utility bottom-line thinking; in other words, cheapness! The problem with this stuff began in the 1930's when utilities started to connect their inadequately-sized neutral (returning current) wires to the Earth (Ground) at frequent intervals. This was supposedly done to protect wires and transformers from lightning strikes. But it was also a way to cheaply increase power-line capacity by using the Earth itself as an alternate path for current returning to the power plants and electrical substations. This uncontrolled experiment on the entire grid-connected surface of the Earth is the cause of many animal herd health problems. And it's the reason for plenty of frustrating litigation against an entrenched corporate electrical power monopoly. It can even modify the Earth's subtle energy fields, radiating upward from the depths, turning a normally beneficial energy geopathic. For a terrific article explaining more about the problems with grid wiring and stray voltage try this link.

    Page 7: High-Frequency EMF
The invisible "second-hand smoke" of the digital age

The semantic dividing line between low- and high-frequency electromagnetic radiation, from a human perspective, is hard to pin down precisely. In theory it would be some point at which:
    • wavelengths correspond more to common dimensions found on the human body
    • penetration of energy into the body becomes more shallow
    • wave reflections from metal objects become more frequent and intense
But in practice, most EMF meters used for low-frequency detection reach their peak at about 500 kHz (500,000 cycles per second) while high-frequency meters begin low-end detection from 1 MHz to 50 MHz (1,000,000 cycles per second to 50,000,000 cycles per second).

Once again it's the flavor (AC), frequency (50 Hz+), proximity, intensity, duration, and sensitivity that matter. Alternating electric and/or magnetic fields at a non-biocompatible frequency that are too close, too intense, for too long, near a highly EMF-sensitive individual will cause symptoms of several hard-to-diagnose illnesses. Cell phones, microwave ovens, cordless phones, "smart meters", and wireless networks all operate in the microwave range of 300,000,000 Hz (300 MegaHertz, or MHz) to 5.8 GigaHertz (or GHz; that's 5,800,000,000 Hz). Frequencies this high are very powerful, though not deeply penetrating, and are hard to shield since they readily reflect off many objects (OK, electrical engineers, these electric fields don't really reflect, they take the outermost, "free" electrons in metallic objects up to a higher energy state, then when the electrons fall back to a lower state the electric field is re-transmitted in all directions, creating multi-path distortion).

The Effects on Children: Gambling With Your DNA

    Did you know that:
    • your national government sets the allowable dosage for high-frequency radiation?
    • these standards have been, and continue to be, set at levels that mainly protect the military and industries from prosecution resulting from excessive EM radiation?
    • the FCC's (astronomically high) limit for cellphone radiation dosage is based on an average power level over the course of 30 minutes (even though the power burst levels are much higher)?
    • this so-called SAR (Specific Absorption Rate) only applies to adults?
    • metal structures, such as a car's interior, reflect much of a cellphone's energy back at you?
    • you were notified in your cellular contract that the excessive level emitted by your cellphone is allowable by law since it was your "personal choice" to use it?
    • these "safe levels" were set based only on tissue heating (microwave cooking) and obvious changes in animal behavior?
    • the average SAR for a small bit (1 gram) of tissue is allowed to be 20 times higher than the whole-body dose, just to allow for localized overexposure of your brain, eyes, etc.? (That's an average SAR of 0.08 Watts/kilogram for whole-body exposure, or 1.6 W/kg for 1 gram of tissue).
    • the periodic "burst" signal sent out from your phone when it is looking for a tower can be 10 times or more the strength of the operating signal, and this added intensity is just averaged into the SAR specification.

    A little bit of background

In 1996, Dr. O. Ghandi at the University of Utah did a comparative study of SAR dose response in adults and children. In general brain tissue, at the same power output, the dosage in a 10-year old is over 2.5 times the level for an adult. The level for a 5-year old was over 4 times as high.

Using 3 types of eye tissue (whole eye, lens, and connective tissue), the dose for a 10-year old was over 5 times the adult level. For a 5-year old the level was over 11 times as high. The study was done using cellphone frequencies, but others (such as 2.4 GHz networks) resonate with smaller bodily structures, and at a higher dose since their force is directly related to their frequency.

Based on size-resonance with other kid-sized organs not listed in this study, many other health effects may be found "down the line". So citizens groups in many countries are now using the "Precautionary Principle" to battle with telecommunications companies and school districts that are pushing for more wireless networks. The U.S., the U.K. and Australia have the highest allowable radiation levels. Other countries have set "safe" levels much lower! For more of the latest information about what's going on around the world in terms of research, laws, etc., check out Microwave News.

The bottom line for automotive cellphone users:
Next time you're shuttling your kids around in the automobile and answer a call, you can endanger the future of your DNA both in the short-term (from increased risk of accident) and the long-term (from increased cancer risk and genetic damage carried to future generations)!

To see some early research on SAR levels and how they are calculated and measured, along with some great illustrations, just Click Here for a free PDF download. This study just deals with the most obvious tissue heating effects, but you'll get an idea of how it affects adults, and can figure out for yourself what the multipliers for children (discussed above) would look like.

And if you'd like to see how your cellphone compares with other models in terms of SAR values (again, figured for adults), this link has the most recent updates and shows how non-human models are used to test for this.

Science Says: "No Mechanism = No Effect", (I Say: "Not So Fast!")

The exact mechanism for the cellular damage caused by high-frequency electric fields has been a mystery for years, leading most well-paid authorities on the subject to conclude that "no mechanism equals no effect". But a recent discovery by a cancer researcher has mistakenly revealed a big clue. The researcher was working on a way to inject metal ions into a tumor (which can be done directly or through the faster uptake of ions in the bloodstream by cancer cells) and use radio frequencies to kill just the metal-saturated cancer cells. By accident, he bumped a test tube containing saline solution which was in a high-frequency field. There was a flash, as hydrogen and oxygen, given off by the saline solution, exploded above the tube. He found that radio frequencies cause electrolysis in saline solutions!

Saline is the salt water flowing throughout your body. And what happens to free mono-molecular oxygen (O instead of O2) in the body? It can kill cells directly (like a hydrogen peroxide disinfectant) or it can form "free radicals" which work in the same way. With all of the frequencies urban humans are exposed to, you'd better be stocking up on anti-oxidants and eating your fruits and veggies!

And this is just one of the many possible routes for over-exposure.

Another intriguing problem is the number of weak chemical bonds in cells that keep proteins, such as DNA, folded into the proper configuration. While it takes ionizing radiation (higher frequencies than visible light) to break covalent bonds, these Van der Waals bonds are easily broken by heat, chemicals, and non-ionizing radiation. Couple this with the research published in Science magazine about the HSP90 protein (Nicolas Rohner, Harvard Medical School & Susan Lindquist, MIT). HSP90 is a protein that keeps other proteins properly folded. When the organism is stressed HSP90 no longer does this task and protein variations are much more likely. This is how a stressful environment opens up the possibilities for greater species variation, mutation, and natural selection, but the same applies for EMF or geopathic stress and the possibilities for protein malformation.

The best solutions I've seen, from testing various phones

    • First, don't assume that your land-line phone is safe; the handset sometimes is surrounded by a large, low-frequency electric field. Get a meter and test for this!
    • Use a land-line speakerphone if you want the lowest radiation output, staying a couple of feet away from it If you must use a cordless/cellphone, use a "holster" along with an "air tube" earpiece (LessEMF is one source)
    • Make sure your cellular reception (number of "bars") is as high as possible. This reduces your phone's output power and saves battery life while reducing your EMF exposure as well as those around you
    • Turn the cordless/cellphone off when you don't absolutely need to take a call. If you don't the phone periodically checks in with the network, blasting out powerful EMF bursts as it does so. The same applies to home wireless networks for computers, and these check for a network about twice per second. Put the wireless router on a switched receptacle or switched plug-in strip and USE that switch!
    • Switch hands occasionally to spread exposure to both brain hemispheres ("lesser of 2 evils", but it helps). If cellphones don't cause brain cancer why is it usually found on the side that the user placed against their ear?
    • Stay out of or away from signal-reflecting metal walls, like automobile interiors, metal-clad buildings, etc.
    • Don't let kids or pregnant women use them or near them if you care about their health (or fetal health)
    • Try a remediation device such as the Q-Link, which supposedly "jams" the cellular frequencies harmful effects
    • If you have to use a cellphone do texts instead of calling, holding the unit away from your body, and others, when you send the message. The unit still checks in with the network periodically if it's on, but only blasts out a message when you send it.
    • If you are in a spot with poor connection to the network your "sleeping" phone will put out more powerful bursts trying to connect to the network, greatly increasing the energy radiated into the spot on your body nearest the phone. This can quickly negate any benefit from only doing texts!
    • If you live in a large city you may be literally soaked in many frequencies and types of wave-forms. Doing EMF remediation in these environments requires lots of money and patience, both for the practitioner and the homeowner (expensive frequency analyzers, expensive conductive shielding paints, and cobalt/nickel magnetic plates/films). If this is your situation find a "Baubiologie" expert in your area and hang on for a long costly ride. But once you leave your home you are back in the EMF soup so don't expect miracles.
    • You may be asking, "So what do YOU folks do for phone and data connections"? We use standard land-line telephones connected to a Verizon-supplied "fixed wireless terminal". It connects to the cellular phone network via a high-gain, directional "yagi" antenna on the roof using some thick, low-loss, RG-8/U, 13 AWG coaxial cable.
    • We also use a 12 Mbps (usually 20 Mbps download and 3 Mbps upload speeds) satellite internet service called "Exede" from Wild Blue Communications. It too resides outside, sending and receiving signals from 22,000 miles away, and connects via coaxial cable to an indoor modem.

"Smart Meters": another intense source of high-frequency EMF

Yes, the DSP (digital signal processing) chip in an electrical "smart meter" can indeed tell a refrigerator motor from an electric shaver and a computer from a dimmer switch, so do you really want the utility company to know THAT much about you?

The power factor (magnetic-electric phase angle) and harmonics that the chip adds to the watts of power usage to determine what you are using can be disguised. The Stetzer filters mentioned on the Page 9, below, will alter the power factor and greatly dampen the harmonics, making it much harder for the DSP to decode your appliances.

If the meter is already installed you are probably stuck with it. The utility's lawyers got onto this issue WAY before your lawyer will, and they are covered under your "implied consent" to substitute a meter that "essentially duplicates the function" of your previous non-wireless meter.

What to do? Individual sensitivities to high-frequency electric fields vary, but they drop by the square of your distance from them. In other words, double your distance and your exposure is one-fourth of what it was. This is a big factor in neighborhoods where all of your neighbors can have as many as three of these transmitters firing every 15 to 120 seconds. Some of the most sensitive individuals either have to move away or coat their interior/exterior walls with an electric field shielding paint, made form copper or silver (found, among other places, at LessEMF). Another option to simply reduce exposure to the meters on your own home is to shield yourself from just those meters using common aluminum window screening. You can mount a 4-by-4 foot piece of screen either behind the meter(s) on the home's exterior or centered on the same spot on the home's interior. This will simply reflect the signal outward and it increases the level outdoors on the meter-side of your home, possibly overexposing your neighbors. It is best to ground the screen using a simple "alligator clip" on the screen attached to a wire that leads to the nearest ground rod (exterior) or the center screw on the cover-plate of the nearest electrical outlet (interior - but make sure that it is really connected to the home's ground system). The ground rod uses a "ground clamp" while the cover-plate screw needs a "ring terminal" for best electrical contact. This procedure uses the earth itself to absorb and dissipate the signal heading in toward your home.

"Active" Devices as an EMF Solution

There are numerous devices in the marketplace that claim to eliminate EMF problems by actively sensing and jamming the problem signals with a reverse polarity at the same frequency. While this sounds great in theory, in practice it can only work in the tiny zone where the intensity of the problem signal exactly matches that of the generating device's signal. Stray outside of this border zone and you get increasingly larger exposures to either the source signal or the so-called solution. It's far better to shield or eliminate the problem at its source rather than adding yet another ingredient to the local EMF soup.

Page 8: Harmonic Frequencies and Transient Bursts

Harmonic AC (alternating current) frequencies are like the octaves in music. They are simply multiples of the intended frequency, usually at a much lower intensity. If you look at audio equipment specifications you will find a figure for "harmonic distortion", hopefully as low as you can afford to hear.

Transients are caused by electricity's preference to move in a fixed direction. Electricity behaves badly when it is stopped or started suddenly, and this is exactly what happens when you use:

    • Any switch
    • A piece of equipment with a switching power supply (a "wall wart", an "inverter", a "converter", a dimmer, etc.)
    • Any transformer, since they work by transferring the energy of a collapsing magnetic field that switches on and off
    • Any AC appliance, since AC current switches direction constantly
The power coming from your electric utility is a very pure "sine wave", but the purity ends at the first consumer's (or independent power producer's) doorstep. Electronic gadgets and other appliances, along with the "power inverters" that connect wind turbines and solar arrays to the grid, all generate distortions of the Utility's pretty, smooth, 60 Hz, sine wave power.

The "harmonics" of 60 Hz (120 Hz, 180 Hz, 240 Hz, etc.) and multi-frequency "transient bursts" (caused by switches, relays, dimmers and other switching power supplies) are found at various levels and at a blend of frequencies. For example, a burst of lightning contains a nearly limitless mix of frequencies, all at an extremely high voltage intensity. Fields of this type are collectively called Electromagnetic Pollution, and they're often subdivided into EXCESSIVE EMF, DIRTY ELECTRICITY, and ELECTROSMOG, depending on the frequency or mix of frequencies.
To see some background information on these frequencies, including more about the filters designed to remove them, Click Here for a free Adobe PDF file download.

A commercial high-frequency harmonic filter is available for home use. Two websites I often mention (LessEMF and Stetzer Electric) offer a power filter called the "Stetzerizer", built for Dave Stetzer of Blair, Wisconsin and designed by Martin Graham of UC Berkeley, in California. The effect of these filters is documented at the website "Electrical Pollution", where Dave used them to fix "sick building syndrome" at a Wisconsin school that was making both students and teachers quite ill. You can read more at Stetzer Electric's site.

The filter in this photo has been altered, by wrapping it in aluminum window screening, to reduce the high-frequency electric fields radiating from its internal capacitor (discussed further below). The only problem I've run across using these filters is that, as they pass the high frequencies into the neutral wire and grounding cable, they generate an electric field that's unshielded. If the wiring is shielded in metal conduit, this leaking signal can far surpass the intensity of the field from the outlet itself. One fix is to move the filters to outlets that aren't near your bed, relaxation areas, or workplace. The other fix involves wrapping a 9.25-inch by 6-inch piece of aluminum window screen around the filter, avoiding the area around the plug-in prongs (see photo above). I secure the screen with a couple of 8-inch plastic wire ties bound end-to-end and wrapped around the sides of the filter. I then attach a small piece of green 14-gauge grounding wire to a ring terminal. The center screw of an outlet cover is grounded (if it's on a grounded system!). The ring terminal is attached to this screw and the other end is stripped and woven into a crease in the aluminum screening. This "grounds" the electric field radiated from the filter. If you don't use the ground tab, the fields are still greatly reduced.

    Health effects
And what does this mean for you and me? These unwanted energies have been correlated with diabetes (a new variety, caused by EMF is called "Type3"), asthma, and Multiple Sclerosis. The symptoms can range from sore eyes, fatigue, headaches, nausea, and "brain-fog" all the way down to miscarriages, chronic fatigue, Alzheimer's, and cancer, among others. Low-voltage DC electric fields are fairly harmless, but large DC magnetic fields, found around large DC motors or heating elements, can be just as disruptive as their AC cousins. If these alone weren't bad enough, chemicals contained (poorly) in many high-tech devices react with various electromagnetic frequencies to make folks with chronic exposure to them REALLY ill! It's what is called a "synergistic effect".

Page 9: EMF Detection and Measurement

Electric Fields and Magnetic Fields are perpendicular to each other and to the conductor generating them. When you try to detect them or measure them you need to visualize what you are dealing with or, depending on your measuring equipment, you may not detect the field or your measurement may be in error.

If you're dealing with a straight wire, measuring nearby low frequencies, picture the wire as the axle of a wheel.

    • Electric fields extend straight outward (like spokes around an axle) down the entire length of wire
    • Magnetic fields rotate around the entire length of wire, like the rim of the wheel.
If you are dealing with a distant point source (radio/TV antenna or cellphone tower) both electric and magnetic fields will be polarized in one of three ways:
    • They may be horizontally polarized
    • They may be vertically polarized like radio, television, and cellphone signals
    • They may have circular polarization, like a satellite signal
To accurately detect and measure them your external receiving antenna, or internal antenna, needs to match the source. And you need to have your meter set up to either select an X, Y, or Z axis, depending on the polarization of the signal. The math to find the "resultant field" from three readings is: "the square root of (X squared + Y squared + Z squared)". Or, if you use a multi-axis meter, you can hope that the internal processor calculates an accurate signal level.

If you are checking electric fields, your meter (and you) must be grounded. This gives the meter a proper reference to allow accurate comparisons between the field and the ground potential in your area. Usually this involves a ground wire connected to the meter, a grounding point on the meter that makes contact with a finger (if the meter is hand-held) and a grounding clip or strap that must be connected to a ground rod, grounded water/gas pipe, or (in the U.S., at least) the center screw attaching the cover-plate to any properly grounded, 120-volt electrical outlet.

Your meter needs to operate within the bandwidth of the signal you are attempting to measure. Meters have full sensitivity within a certain frequency range. Sensitivity falls off on either side of that range. And even within their advertised range, if the meter is inexpensive or simply uncalibrated, the readings may not be completely accurate. For instance, a meter that has full sensitivity in a 50 MHz to 3 GHz range will either not pick up a 5.8 Ghz WiFi router or the reading will be greatly undervalued. But for detection purposes only, a meter that detects the frequency range of interest will suffice.

Your meter must also have enough sensitivity to detect the signal you wish to measure. Sensitivity ranges are advertised but are influenced by whether or not the meter can be switched to a single polarization axis, and by whether or not a more sensitive, frequency optimized, external antenna can be utilized. for instance, if you are simply trying to detect close-range microwave oven emissions, an inexpensive meter with an internal antenna and analog metering that works in the 2.4 GHz range will suffice. But if you are trying to accurately measure a distant cellphone tower to gauge your exposure you may need to spend more for a digital output including peak, maximum, average, and hold functions, along with selectable polarization axis, all calibrated for your target frequency.

In my actual work as a consultant I use a Gigahertz Solutions Digital Electrostress Analyzer, model ME3851A, low-frequency meter that cost roughly $650, but they make another model without frequency switching that costs around $140 (also found at LessEMF). Another meter that can be very educational is the "Zap Checker", model 270, also from LessEMF. This meter ranges from 10MHz. (10 megaHertz, or 10,000,000 Hz.) to 6.4 GHz. (6.4 gigaHertz, or 6,400,000,000 Hz., just above the frequency of many new cordless phones). It shows you where cellular phones and towers, radio and TV stations, microwave relay towers (and ovens), and all of the other myriad high-frequency sources are beaming from. In my actual consulting work, where I need a more exact, calibrated readout of high-frequency power levels, I use the TES-92 Electrosmog Meter. If you wish to pin-point both the frequency and the intensity level you will need to spend a great deal more for what amounts to a portable spectrum analyzer.

And you may have noticed, while shopping for an EMF meter, or while attempting to compare the measuring units on your meter to published materials regarding EMF exposure, that the mathematics can be daunting. For several years we have offered both a spreadsheet with most of the commonly used measuring units and the formulas used to make conversions between them as simple as possible.

Electromagnetic Fields - first some definitions

The energy that builds up the electrical pressure that boosts voltage also builds an ELECTRIC FIELD around any CONDUCTOR (like copper, aluminum, or steel wire) that carries electricity. The higher the voltage, the stronger the electric field.

The movement of electrons, or their energy, through the conductor cause the build-up of a MAGNETIC FIELD around that conductor. Since both electrical pressure and a volume of electrons flow through the wires when a device is turned on, we're usually talking about ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELDS, not just electric or magnetic fields.

Picturing these fields can be a challenge, but the most succinct description I've seen goes as follows: Electric Fields and Magnetic Fields are perpendicular to each other and to the conductor generating them.

    • In other words, if you're dealing with a straight wire, picture the wire as the axle of a bicycle wheel.
    • Electric fields extend radially, straight outward (like spokes around an axle) down the entire length of wire.
    • Magnetic fields only come into existence when power is flowing through the wire.
    • The magnetic fields rotate around the entire length of wire, like a series of bicycle rims around the spokes.
    • Electromagnetic fields are the combination of these two distinctive but interactive field types.

When you switch on a household appliance, also known generally as a LOAD, voltage causes amps to flow through ALL of the conductors leading from the power source to that device. This means all the way from the device, through its power cord, through the wiring in your walls, floors, ceilings, to the breaker/fuse box, etc. While the switch is ON there are BOTH electric and magnetic fields surrounding the load and all of the wires leading to it. When you turn off the switch there is still an electric field in all of these wires and, quite often, in the device itself.

Electricity comes to us in various types, or what I call its FLAVORS. One of them is STATIC ELECTRICITY, or an ELECTROSTATIC FIELD, which is another term for the build-up of electrical pressure, or voltage. When the static electricity grows strong enough to jump from a doorknob to our fingers we call it a spark. When it jumps from a cloud to a tree we call it lightning. In either case it's no longer static; it moves. Since it moves in one direction it's called DIRECT CURRENT (DC). The most familiar form of DC comes from an ordinary BATTERY, which is a combination of metals and chemicals that react to build voltage and store a fixed number of AMP-HOURS (amps times the time in hours that they'll continue to flow).

If this DC current is turned on and off we encounter PULSED DC. This is most commonly found in the ubiquitous switching power supplies found in computers, DC-DC converters, variable speed motors, dimmer switches, etc. And even lightning usually flashes more than once along an ionized air pathway. All forms of pulsed DC produce HARMONIC frequencies (like octaves in a musical scale) because electrical current reacts rather violently to being suddenly started and stopped.

And if we actually reverse the flow of electrical current (polarity) when turning it on and off we encounter ALTERNATING CURRENT (AC). The most common form, called a "sine-wave" is found in any grid-connected home's wiring. A less common form comes from a low-cost DC-to-AC "inverter". It is called the "modified sine-wave" or "square-wave", where the polarity switching is far less smooth, producing much more "harmonic distortion" of the sine-wave, although almost any AC source will have some higher frequency distortion riding along with it.

    The Problem for us:

Some flavors and frequencies of electricity are compatible with humans and other life forms, while some are not. Earthly animals have evolved within a weak soup of EMF ranging from DC to the AC range of 8 Hz - 40 Hz, called micro-pulsations, Schumann waves, Tesla waves, etc. All other frequencies are biologically alien to our bodies.

The big problem with transient, pulsed and alternating fields is this:

For example, if your metal-framed or metal-sprung bed is shoved up tight against a wall that has AC electrical outlets (with "unshielded" plastic-covered wiring supplying them) on it, even if nothing is plugged into the outlets or turned on, your bed is bathed in both magnetic and electric fields caused by the wiring in the wall! The other big problem with electricity in general is that it takes every path it can, not just the ones that we want it to take! For more information on this, scroll down to the note on stray voltage near the bottom of this page.

Solutions for EMF Problems, a checklist:

    Magnetic Fields:
    • Have a qualified installer put non-conductive, plastic sections in your incoming water and drain pipes (even skilled plumbers have been electrocuted while attempting this)
    • Use a separate outdoor grounding rod (other than pipes)
    • Magnetic shielding (MuMetal, cobalt, or nickel-based metal alloys)as close to the source as possible
    • Clustering opposing electrical phases (hot and neutral, or + and -) in metal conduit (EMT or "BX"/ "MC" armored cable)
    • Turning off the electrical breaker leading to the device that generates the excessive field, especially at night if you sleep near that field

    Low-Frequency Electric Fields:

    • Grounded "BX' or "MC" cable, or EMT tubing, metal boxes & covers
    • Replacing unshielded cords with shielded power cords, or surround the unshielded cord in aluminum foil seam-sealing tape, which is used to tape seams of foil-based house insulation (but not too near the end you plug in, we don't want any sparks!)
    • Reducing proximity and duration of exposure
    • Best possible grounding (clean and tight connections)
    • Grounded conductive shields (for large areas like the wall near your bed we use aluminum or steel window screen, grounded to a nearby outlet, either on the cover plate screws or ground socket).
    • Fluorescent lights, whether tube-type or compact fluorescent (CFL), have a "ballast" transformer or inverter that converts line voltages to 10,000+ volts, creating either a huge local magnetic or electric field. Some LED lights also use either a transformer or DC-DC converter, causing the same problem. Use a meter to check locally-purchased bulbs so you can return them easily if their EMF emissions look excessive.
    • Substitute low-emission LED (light emitting diode) bulbs in areas where they are near humans and other animals.

    Electrical Noise (Harmonics and Transients):

    • Capacitive filters (Stetzerizer, Green Wave, etc.), preferably wrapped and grounded using aluminum or steel window screen
    • Tuned frequency filter from equipment manufacturer (call them)

    High-Frequency Electric Fields:

    • Stick to 3G phones where available since they have a much smaller signal "burst" when looking for a cellular tower.
    • Use a "fixed wireless terminal" with up to 5 "land-line" phones, , and a shielded cable going to an external antenna that connects you to the cellular networks (check with your cellular provider - our 3G unit was free and we pay about $24 per month with unlimited minutes)
    • Use corded phones when possible, or use shielded phone "holsters" and "air tube" earpieces
    • Install wired networks, using readily available Cat-5 cable (if you already have a "wired+wireless" router, just unscrew its antenna and disable your computer's wireless network using its software or use power management to shut it down when not in use - ask a "techie" for help here)
    • Shield yourself from the sources (both internal & external), with conductive cloth/screens (for you) or conductive paint, grounded foil-coated foam insulation, or full metal shielding (for your home)
    • If the source is within your home and it cannot be turned off or replaced with a wired or manually-read device (especially gas, electric, and water utility "Smart Meters") use grounded metal screening between the meter and the interior of your home so that signals only radiate outward from the home and are absorbed on the house side

    More on Grounding and Shielding

There are a number of EMF shielding, filtering, and dissipating products and devices on the market, most of them rather expensive. And although the typical grid-connected home could arguably be greatly improved using any or all of them, simply shutting off the circuit breaker(s) that lead to your bedroom every night is the single most cost-effective solution for eliminating 33% of your electric and magnetic field exposure. Would you rather wake up to music at your bedside or have a good night's sleep? Your choice!

Or putting a shield made from aluminum (or preferably, galvanized steel) window screen on the wall behind your headboard and wiring it to the nearest outlet's ground terminal works well for electric fields (know what you're doing here or find someone who does!). If you don't ground the window screen shield the electric field is reflected at nearly double strength in the opposing direction. If you live in an apartment this could be quite detrimental to your next-door neighbor!

And remember that a bedroom above another floor could be getting electric fields through the floor from ceiling lights and their associated wiring downstairs. Use a meter and check in every direction around your bed! Remember what was said above about electricity taking every path available? Unless all of the potential ways that electricity returns to the power-line transformer are bonded together with low-resistance wire, power will flow back, separately, from the neutral wire (preferred), the ground rod, metal water pipes, metal gas lines, the cable company's ground rod, the phone company's ground rod, metal sewer lines, and even your body if you are standing on a wet floor!

Ideally, all grounding possibilities should be bonded into one grounding point! Check your incoming/outgoing pipes for magnetic fields and, if they are metal, you may find that electricity is flowing from house to house along the water supply mains, gas pipes, etc. It's best to call the "gas man", electrician or plumber at this point, since you will need to splice a non-conductive section into your supply pipes, and possibly move the main electrical box's ground point along the water pipe, or to a separate ground rod. Doing this by yourself could be dangerous, even lethal!

And check your local electrical codes on grounding requirements in your area! Tearing the walls open to rewire with "BX", or as it's also called, "MC" (spiral-steel conduit, metal-clad) or metal EMT (electrical metal tubing), and putting in metal boxes and cover plates isn't a very savory or low-cost option, but it may make sense for just the bedroom receptacles. Installing MuMetal foil (or one of the other magnetic-shielding fabrics/foils) over high-power electrical cables will contain the magnetic fields. And do not forget proximity. The intensity of the magnetic field drops with the square of the distance from their source, and the electric field intensity (from a wire) drops linearly with distance. In other words, move your bed twice as far from that wall with the outlets in it and you've got one-fourth the magnetic field intensity and one-half the electric field intensity at night.
